Medical Officer

SUMMARY:
The Allergy and Immunology Unit (AIU) at the UCT Lung Institute is seeking a Medical Officer to lead the SENTINEL-01 study site in Masiphumelele. This is a full-time post with non-standard hours. Some evening and occasional weekend availability is required.
 
SENTINEL-01 is a Wellcome Trust-funded observational study examining how environmental exposures affect asthma symptoms, lung function, and quality of life in children aged 6 to 15 years.
 
This role is offered under the University of Cape Town Lung Institute’s own employment terms and conditions, which are separate from UCT conditions of service.

• MBChB
• Registration with Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
• Valid South African driver's licence

• GCP certification
• Paediatric clinical experience, including comfort with paediatric blood draws
• Research or clinical trial experience as a sub-investigator
• Proficiency in isiXhosa and/or Afrikaans (advantageous)
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and strong organizational skills
• Able to work autonomously and within a team

• Leading participant recruitment, screening, and enrolment in the community.
• Conducting clinical assessments in participants' homes, accompanied by a community health worker.
• Performing and supervising paediatric assessments including spirometry, structured symptom reviews, and blood draws.
• Providing clinical oversight and day-to-day coordination for a team of three (nurse and two community health workers).
• Identifying and reporting adverse events and protocol deviations in accordance with GCP standards.
• Maintaining accurate data entry and clinical documentation to GCP standards.
• Engaging with the local clinic, school, and community stakeholders in Masiphumelele and Ocean View.
• Driving the study vehicle independently to participant homes and community sites.
• Interface with non-unit clinical and trial staff and regulatory personnel

• Based at the Desmond Tutu Health Foundation facility in Masiphumelele, Cape Town
• Includes regular fieldwork within Masiphumelele and Ocean View
• Full-time position (40 non-standard hours per week)
• 12-month fixed-term contract
