PURPOSE OF ROLE: 

This is a strategic business role that consults directly to CIB Business Exco. A thought partner to Chief Executive and Executive Committee is needed to drive the formulation of business goals and facilitate growth of the business:

  • To develop and review overall firm strategy, and drive strategy processes in the business
  • To provide in-house consulting expertise superior to external providers
  • To assist in the prioritization of the Chief Executive agenda
  • To manage the Exco process in terms of agenda setting and content delivery
  • Stakeholder management activities: preparing communications on the business performance and strategy for the Group, Investor Relations and other.

 

     Approach:

  • Work will be carried out individually or in small teams, individuals will be required to engage in multiple projects at any given time
  • The individual will work with and leverage the ability of other departments as needed, with overall responsibility for delivering against agreed deadlines
  • The department is seen as an intake function, with the opportunity to move into a business or infrastructure role after 2 to 3 years

 

 

MAIN ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The responsibilities will be varied and include the following critical performance areas:

 

  • Act as a trusted advisor to Exco members and clients
  • Lead business projects aimed at revenue opportunities or developing cost and efficiency programmes
  • Develop and defend hypothesis/ insights/ recommendations
  • Structure work blocks
  • Conduct rigorous, transparent analysis to enable effective decision making
  • Ensure all work produced is “partner/ client-ready” output
  • Participate in the Exco secretariat duties - compiling agenda and content for meeting to drive good debate
  • Work with Front Office and Infrastructure (in particular Finance, HR, Capital Management and Risk) to ensure required levels of business support

REQUIREMENTS:

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

 

  • 4 - 8 years’ experience in blue chip consulting/ investment banking environment
  • Undergraduate degree in Maths/ Science/ Engineering/ CA preferred
  • Post Graduate business qualification will be advantageous
  • Consulting experience in Financial Services, preferably wholesale banking
  • Evidence of career progression, e.g. promotion track record

 

Experience preferred but not limited to the following:

  • Management consulting, banking preferred
  • Global exposure and or Africa experience preferred
  • Exco/ board strategy and market development, digital and innovation and execution support
  • Ability to influence and manage senior stakeholders - Strategic business advisory to executives
  • Partner with leaders to establish key growth objectives, develop strategic priorities and drive CIB-wide priorities

 

Technical knowledge and skills (strategy and tradecraft skills):    

  • Understanding of investment banking: Actively using in-depth knowledge of latest developments to identify opportunities for the organisation
  • Problem solving: Break down complex problems into sub-problems, conduct insightful analyses and deliver an appropriate end-product. Creative, innovative approach
  • Analytics and quantitative skills: Competent with highly technical analyses (e.g., statistical) and large data volumes
  • Modelling skills (Excel): Advanced Excel skills, can write well-documented models for more complex problems (e.g. including customer churn)
  • PowerPoint skills: Advanced PowerPoint skills and template knowledge – never using incorrect  formats/ templates
  • Presentation writing skills: Can write sections of ‘storied’ deck with consistent ‘horizontal’ and ‘vertical logic’
  • Project management, structuring and resourcing: Leading multiple projects for one client (business line owner)

 

Competencies: 

  • Business Skills - Business acumen and client focus: Intimate knowledge of 6-8 business lines (some in Rates, some in Credit, plus Sales). Actively manages to combine disjoint pieces of client work into outcome that reflects benefit to the firm as a whole
  • Commercial effectiveness: Strategic thinking and execution: Strong presentation skills, good verbal communication effectiveness in meetings
  • Entrepreneurial - Good understanding of client needs and translation into deliverables
