CA - Chartered Accountant Job Overview

Chartered Accountants serve in four areas: taxation, financial accounting and reporting, applied finance and management accounting. The specialisation an accountant selects determines under which umbrella they work. Chartered Accountants can perform many functions and potentially oversee an entire business accounting sector.

Responsibilities of a CA - Chartered Accountant

The following is a summary of some of the roles that CAs may perform:

 

Financial Statements Preparation: This includes balance sheets, income statements and cash flow statements. These documents give investors an idea about how well a company performed in previous periods and how much money was earned or lost during that period. They also provide information about how much money was spent on expenses such as salaries, rent and utilities during each quarter or year covered by the report.

 

Tax Planning: Tax planning involves analysing a client's tax situation to maximise deductions while minimising taxes owed.

 

Business Advice: CAs help businesses manage their finances effectively and efficiently. They often work closely with business owners, managers and other professionals in an advisory capacity to help these individuals address financial problems before they become serious issues for their companies.

 

In addition, there may be other duties assigned by employers or supervisors, which include:

Identifying trends in financial markets and industries

  • Analysing trends related to business operations and management strategies
  • Performing research pertaining to various industries
  • Supervising accounting clerks and junior auditors
  • Conducting audits, reviews and compilations for third parties, such as investors and lenders

CA - Chartered Accountant Qualifications

  • NSC Matric certificate
  • Study at a SAICA-recognised university for a degree and write CTA (Certificate in the Theory of Accounting which is also your Honours year). Degrees needed: Bachelor of Accounting Sciences in Financial Accounting.
  • Complete your degree and complete a CTA.
  • Complete a learnership programme with a registered training office.
  • Pass the Initial Test of Competence (ITC) or the Assessment of Professional Competence (APC)
  • After the learnership and qualifying exams are complete, you can register with SAICA.
