Commercial underwriters are responsible for determining a company's risk to an insurance company. They evaluate the company's business, operations and financial statements to determine if they fit into specific guidelines set by the insurance provider.

Responsibilities of a Commercial Underwriter

As an underwriter, you'll be responsible for several different tasks:

• Reviewing applications submitted by potential policyholders and making recommendations about whether or not to accept them
• Verifying whether applicants meet all the eligibility requirements for the coverage requested (such as having sufficient assets or income)
• Determining whether the applicant's risk factors match those of the policy being requested (such as having too many speeding tickets)
• Assessing how much risk insurers should take on by issuing policies (for example, whether someone is likely to cancel their policy before it expires)
• Determining a client's eligibility for coverage based on criteria such as industry and sales volume
• Writing policy language for use in insurance contracts with clients

Commercial Underwriter Qualifications

Commercial underwriters have a variety of skills and qualifications. These include:

• Obtain a Bachelor's Degree in Risk Management, Finance or Business
• Experience in commercial lending, including consumer finance and real estate lending.
• Strong analytical skills. Commercial underwriters must be able to analyse financial statements, assess risk and make recommendations based on their findings.
• Excellent customer service skills. They must be able to interact with clients professionally regardless of the situation or circumstances. They may also be responsible for explaining complex financial concepts to clients who may not have a firm grasp of business or accounting principles.
