SUMMARY:
Are you an experienced leader in the meat industry, passionate about food safety and operational excellence? Meat Traders Abattoir (Pty) Ltd in Queenstown is seeking a highly organised, hands-on Abattoir Manager to oversee our slaughter floor and further processing operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all slaughtering activities: animal reception, slaughter process, cut up, aging, storage, chilling, and freezing
- Manage further processing, packaging, cold chain logistics, and waste management
- Ensure compliance with HACCP and hygiene standards, and conduct daily cleaning and maintenance inspections
- Lead, train, and manage staff; prepare training programs and materials
- Oversee inspection operations to maintain a continuous supply of safe, high-quality meat
- Manage production schedules, quality control, and cost efficiency
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot all slaughtering equipment and tools
- Prepare timely and relevant operational reports
- Ensure accurate stock management and reporting
POSITION INFO:
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Agricultural Economics, or Meat Science (strongly preferred)
- Food Safety Certifications: HACCP and Hygiene Practices (essential)
- National Senior Certificate (Grade 12)
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a meat-related field with strong understanding of beef facility operations
- At least 2 years’ managerial experience in a similar position
- Experience with venison, offal packing, and further meat processing (advantageous)
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and Abaserve
- Fluent in English (essential); Xhosa proficiency advantageous
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Highly organised, detail-oriented, and able to work under pressure
