Assistant Sommelier

A trendy fine-dining restaurant is on the hunt for a passionate and experienced ASSISTANT SOMMELIER

POSITION INFO:
Are you passionate about fine wine and world-class hospitality? A prestigious luxury wine estate in Stellenbosch seeks a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Assistant Sommelier to enhance our exceptional dining experience. This role offers the opportunity to work with an award-winning wine collection, assist guests with expert pairings, and support the Head Sommelier in curating an unforgettable wine journey.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Training of other restaurant staff;
• Ensure presentation and temperature of all drinks are correct
• Updating wine list as necessary;
• Placing an order for all wines and other beverages;
• Meet with suppliers and find new and exciting wines to add to our portfolio;
• Ensure that the wine service area is set up and ready for service;
• Ensure that there is enough stock and equipment;
• Ensure all equipment is in working order & report if not;
• Conduct temperature checks;
• Ensure all decanters are clean and in good repair;
• Ensure a minimum loss through breakage, waste, theft and incorrect orders;
• Monthly stock-take of beverages;
• Promote guest satisfaction;
• Adhere strictly to the provisions and regulations as contained in the Liquor Act (No. 59 of 2003) and other regulations as may be applicable to the sale of alcoholic beverages.

• Grade 12 and certificate from Cape Wine Academy or WSET level 1
• Preferably 1-2 years of wine tutor experience
• In-depth knowledge of wines - grape varieties and regions, harvest times, climates, soils and wine-making process and being able to communicate and explain this to guests
• Passionate about wine and the hospitality industry
• Excellent interpersonal- & communication skills
• Strong customer service orientation
• Ability to maintain a professional working relationship with all departments
• Comfortable in dealing with very distinguished clientele
• Must be well-presented & enthusiastic
• Must reside in Stellenbosch or close surrounding areas
