JOB DESCRIPTION:

Main purpose of the job:

  • To lead the implementation of a Clinical Research program strategy in line with organizational strategies and objectives, and oversee the technical direction relating to the program at an organizational level

Location:

  • Ward 21, Hillbrow Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

  • Provide visible strategic leadership both internally and externally around evidence-based good practice in Clinical Research
  • Provide oversight and management of Clinical Research Pharmacy and Laboratory
  • Implement a strategic plan for the Clinical Research Operations (Laboratory and Pharmacy) to meet the organization's needs
  • Monitor relevant clinical trials and research projects by liaising with project managers and fulfilling all duties of the principal investigator in keeping with applicable regulations
  • Evaluate progress on implementation of plans, and take corrective action where necessary
  • Compile departmental reports as and when required
  • Ensure the rollout of safe and appropriate Clinical Research approaches to all target groups
  • Write grant proposals, protocols, and ethics applications in order to fund and carry out research studies
  • Supervise conceptualization, design, and execution of research studies conducted by clinical research team members
  • Attend and participate in organizational research meetings and with stakeholders
  • Provide technical advice to Programme staff members on clinical study design
  • Write and submit research outputs for publication
  • Act as a point of contact for the Clinical Research Programme for partner organizations and manufacturers, research collaborators, donors, as well as and internally where appropriate
  • Communicate with all levels of Programme staff around clinical research inputs and outputs
  • Communicate effectively with local, regional, and international collaborators and stakeholders
  • Provide feedback to internal and external stakeholders locally, regionally, and globally. Act as a point of contact for the relevant technical area for the DoH, WHO, partner organizations, donors, and internal stakeholders Attend to all staffing requirements and administration
  • Supervise and manage the duties of subordinates to ensure optimal staff utilization and maintenance of sound labor relations
  • Set and review work plans
  • Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments
  • Identify substandard performance by team members and take necessary corrective action
  • Coach and train subordinates and team members to ensure the acquisition of knowledge and skills required by the organization
  • Promote harmony, teamwork, and sharing of information

Required minimum education and training:

  • Master or Postgraduate degree in any Health Related Field

Required minimum work experience:

  • Minimum 5-7 years of senior management experience in complex projects

Professional body registration:

  • As appropriate/HPCSA or council approvals

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

  • Significant experience working in a clinical research environment, especially in clinical trails
  • Demonstrated leadership, management, and change management abilities, including the ability to manage a diverse team
  • Be a proactive agent influencing positive change with external stakeholders with the ability to develop and maintain stakeholder relationships at all levels of the Organisation and partner organizations
  • Positive, energetic team leader with an ability to adapt to complex situations, manage stress, and deliver goals pro-actively
  • Organized with a thorough and accurate approach to work attention to detail
