Our client, a leading logistics and trading firm, is seeking an experienced Customs Specialist to manage and oversee all import/export customs processes across multiple South African ports. This role is pivotal in ensuring full compliance with customs regulations, accurate and timely submission of documentation, and smooth clearance of goods.
Job Summary
The successful candidate will be responsible for framing and processing Import/Export Bills of Entry, coordinating customs clearances, managing all shipment documentation, and liaising with relevant authorities to ensure smooth operations. This position requires exceptional attention to detail, strong technical knowledge of customs regulations, and the ability to work under pressure while managing multiple priorities.
Key Responsibilities

Frame and process Import/Export Bills of Entry for multiple ports and customs branches.

Coordinate all customs clearance processes, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and internal procedures.

Liaise with trading, logistics, and shipping teams to obtain shipment details, discharge quantities, and values for clearance and invoicing.

Prepare and review supplier commercial invoices in FUSION for each port of discharge.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date customs documentation, vessel files, and clearance records.

Work closely with customs authorities, port health, agriculture, and other regulatory bodies to resolve clearance issues promptly.

Manage deferment accounts, including large-scale customs and VAT payments, ensuring timely processing to avoid penalties.

Apply for and renew permits as required (e.g., agriculture, plant health) and process all related payments.

Stay current with customs legislation, tariff updates, and regulatory changes to ensure continued compliance.

Assist with month-end processes, including raising invoices and providing customs-related input for financial reporting.
Skills & Competencies

In-depth knowledge of South African customs regulations, procedures, and systems (including ACS).

Minimum 5 years’ experience in customs clearance within logistics, freight forwarding, or trading.

Strong stakeholder management skills with established industry contacts.

High-level numeracy and analytical abilities for duty, VAT, and tariff calculations.

Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and FUSION (or similar systems).

Ability to handle high volumes of transactions accurately and within strict deadlines.

Strong communication skills and the ability to liaise confidently with authorities and internal teams.

Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Qualifications

Relevant tertiary qualification in Customs, Logistics, or Supply Chain Management (preferred).

Recognised customs compliance certification or similar training is an advantage.
