SUMMARY:
Demand Manager

POSITION INFO:

Our Client a Global tech firm is seeking a Demand Manager to join their team remotely on a contract basis. They offer stability, growth and an excellent working environment.

Description

Our client requires a Demand Manager who has experience in Development, Security and Infrastructure. Agile and Waterfall are required as well as experience in resource planning.

Be in a position to advise on Availability, Capacity, and forecasted Demand. Develop and oversee Demand, Capacity, and Availability Management processes, procedures, risks, and work instructions that include developing, analysing, managing, and reporting overall status and recommendations for project resource requirements.

Requirements

  • Good general understanding of Information Technology disciplines, a person who understands development, security, infrastructure etc. Not an expert but a generalist with good overall IT knowledge
  • Working / strong knowledge of Agile and Waterfall principles
  • Strong communication and administration skills
  • Most likely a person who has worked as a senior PM in a large
  • organisation focused on resource planning

Specific Functions

  • Responsible for the coordination of resource time allocations
  • across multiple related and unrelated projects and priorities
  • Detailed resource allocation and tracking of key resources across
  • all projects, maintenance, and business as usual tasks
  • Must be able to extract information from technical resources and
  • challenge the resources on specific items when necessary. i.e. if someone
  • advises that they require 3 hours of their day for maintenance tasks and they
  • are in a governance role as an example
  • Be in a position to advise on Availability, Capacity, and
  • forecasted Demand
  • Develop and oversee Demand, Capacity, and Availability Management
  • processes, procedures, risks, and work instructions that include developing,
  • analysing, managing, and reporting overall status and recommendations for
  • project resource requirements
  • Weekly detailed reporting per identified resources to the CIO
  • Lead the development of Capacity Impact Analysis and Capacity
  • Trend Analysis reports to assist in determining impact root cause. Design
  • Develop & Maintain Periodic Capacity plan includes monitoring, trending, forecasting & assessing new demand In time, allocation of real costs to projects. i.e. if resource X spends 40 hours on a project, we allocate 40 hours multiplied by their rate to the project
  • The demand manager will then need to have a cost per hour per resource (even if just a high level based on grade)

At a high level. When the demand manager joins, they will spend a minimum of 1 hour with resource X to start. In that meeting the Demand Managervwill identify all key tasks the individual is busy with and will list the functions in detail

  • 10 hours a week on administration and mail
  • 15 hours a week on maintenance tasks, i.e. server patching
  • 1 Hour a week on vendor management
  • 2 Hours a week in Project A meetings
  • 12 Hours a week in Project A developments
  • 2 Hours a week in staff management activities (1-on-1’s, team meetings etc., HR approvals etc.)
  • 6 Hours a week on Sigma calls

Based on this example the resource is over utilised by 18.8% based on an 8-hour day in a week. In other words, they have no capacity to take on additional projects. However, this is a moving target, and people involved in multiple projects will need to have their times reviewed regularly. The demand manager would put in processes and tools to allow for the updating of time allocations and make recommendations around timesheets and time tracking where appropriate.

In the case of a new project being initiated, the demand manager would quickly communicate that resource X is over committed and would suggest de-prioritisation of another project, addition of specific resource or recommend project delay.
