Design Engineer

SUMMARY:
The Solar Engineer is responsible for engineering, design (using AutoCAD, Helios Scope or similar simulation software packages), and delivery of grid tied or hybrid solar photovoltaic systems (including rooftop, carport and ground mounted arrays) on time and on budget.

POSITION INFO:

Main Duties / Key Accountabilities

• Provide solar PV design support for proposals and the bid/award process and will provide project management and design consultation for all renewable energy projects.
• Design to include scope of work, complete bill of materials, specifications, bid drawings and project schedule
• Prepare and draft technical design solutions based on software simulation package outputs for project tender documents, client proposals and contracts
• Produce pre-conceptual designs with accompanying production estimates and review structural, geotechnical, environmental, permitting, and zoning challenges for projects.
• Review solar system engineering designs, modelling, and performance data, and provide engineering support during the construction process.
• Manage outside consultants to obtain assessments of project structural or geotechnical considerations, interconnect issues, and to identify the required approvals from municipality approvals and other local authorities as outline in the Small-Scale Embedded Generation (SSEG) guidelines.
• Review, jointly with the Project Stakeholders, the costs of structural estimates, interconnection, permitting agreements, production estimates, and assessment of commercial risk factors
•  Oversee the development of structural and electrical designs for net-metered roof, ground and parking canopy solar electric systems that meet all national, municipality and local authorities’ requirements as well as customer defined requirements.
•  Provide design support for final bids, proposals, and RFIs, and provide support during construction and commissioning.
•  Maintain design and proposal requirements, knowledge of codes and standards, design procedures, methods and process, improve efficiency of project development and project selection process

Requirements: Education, Training and Experience

• Electrical Engineering degree or equivalent
• Strong knowledge of photovoltaic system design and optimizing system components for energy production.
• Strong knowledge of electrical and structural design components and manufacturers.
• 2 - 4 years’ experience of designing PV solar systems (100kW to 1MW)
• Strong design software experience with AutoCAD, PVSyst, Helioscope or equivalent simulation packages.
• Good working knowledge of standard utility process for interconnection approval and design requirements.
• Working knowledge of energy modeling, PV specific modeling, standard electrical calculations, basic structural & mechanical calculation.
• Knowledge and proven experience adhering to regulations and strong working knowledge of the various municipal tariffs
• Sound problem-solving abilities Experience using MS Office, MS Projects,
• In-depth knowledge of National Electrical Code, solar permitting, and other PV system regulatory codes.
