POSITION INFO:

Our firm has been retained by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research of South Africa (CSIR) to search and recruit for the position of Divisional Group Executive: Natural Resources, Enabling Infrastructure, Public and Professional Service. CSIR, a state-owned-entity, is a leading scientific and technology research organisation that develops, localises and diffuses technologies in support of South Africa’s reindustrialisation, the development of a capable state and overall socioeconomic prosperity. The organisation has renewed its growth strategy to increase its focus on supporting a competitive South Africa through innovation, as well as to create a balance between its scientific and technological research and development, and its industrial development work.

 

About the job:

The Divisional Group Executive: Natural Resources, Enabling Infrastructure, Public and Professional Services will drive the leadership, strategy development and implementation, financial sustainability, capability development, performance, operations and governance within the division. The Divisional Group Executive will lead the research, development localisation, and commercialisation of technologies and knowledge solutions from a sound scientific and technological base. The incumbent will garner and utilise market insights to inform the CSIR’s scientific and technological development, and take the organisation’s products and innovations to the market. The incumbent will also be accountable for high-level stakeholder engagement in the private and public sectors, and will drive collaboration with relevant local and international parties. The incumbent will act as a role model, embracing and demonstrating the professional and ethical values and purpose of the CSIR.

 

This position requires a visionary individual with proven and tested leadership skills to lead a staff complement of over 500 highly trained professionals, including other executive managers and other specialists equally trained to doctoral level.

 

This position is based in Pretoria, South Africa.

 

Key responsibilities:

Þ    Lead and provide strategic direction to the Natural Resources, Enabling Infrastructure,

Þ    Public and Professional Service;

Þ    Drive alignment of divisional Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) and commercialisation strategies with the trends, needs and opportunities of the relevant sectors aligned with CSIR strategic objectives;

Þ    Lead and maintain high-level stakeholder engagement in industry and the public sector;

Þ    Drive strategic investment of parliamentary grant to leverage further income from other funding sources;

Þ    Be accountable for financial sustainability, including income diversification, revenue generation, profit and loss;

Þ    Drive and maintain a balanced portfolio of research, development and commercialisation as per the organisation’s vision;

Þ    Drive investment in strategic capabilities for current and future competitiveness;

Þ    Be accountable for quality, health and safety;

Þ    Be accountable for people development, succession planning and transformation;

Þ    Evaluate and manage the divisional risks in terms of people, property, finances and goodwill; and

Þ    Live CSIR values; foster a culture of collaboration within and between divisions.

 

Qualifications, skills and experience:

Þ    A Doctoral degree in science or engineering, not negotiable;

Þ    Five years executive-level experience, and ten years of senior management experience in research, development innovation and commercialisation in industry or a leading research and technology organisation;

Þ    Relevant industry experience in one or more sectors that are relevant to the division;

Þ    Proven track record of managing a minimum budget of R200 million linked to RDI initiatives;

Þ    Proven track record of successful IP commercialisation;

Þ    Evidence of high-level stakeholder management and industry-related networks;

Þ    Excellent communicator with strong, demonstrable business acumen;

Þ    Demonstrated experience of strong people management and organisational development skills; and

Þ    A business degree, as an addition, would add weight to the candidate’s case

Remuneration:

R2,6 –R3,9 million per annum, total cost to company, depending on qualifications and experience
