POSITION INFO:
Fancourt, South Africa’s premier golfing, leisure, and lifestyle destination, is located in George in the heart of the Garden Route. Ideally situated just seven kilometres from George Airport and the historic town centre, our resort spans 613 hectares of beautifully landscaped countryside, framed by the majestic Outeniqua Mountains.
We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Excavator Operator to join our team. This role is essential to maintaining and developing our world-class golf courses, dams, and grounds. We are looking for a dependable operator with solid technical ability, strong situational awareness, and a commitment to safe, precise work in a demanding outdoor environment.
In this role the Excavator Operator will be responsible for operating heavy machinery as required, ensuring all excavation, dam maintenance, and earth-moving tasks are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest standard. The role involves working in varied terrain and weather conditions and requires strong attention to detail, physical endurance, and a disciplined approach to safety.
You will report to the Irrigation Supervisor and support daily and project-based work across the estate.
Key Qualifications and Experience required:
- Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- A valid Excavator Operator Competency Certificate.
- Formal training from an accredited heavy-machinery training authority.
- 2–3 years’ experience operating heavy machinery such as excavators (amphibious and standard) and TLBs.
- Experience in golf course or sports-turf maintenance will be ideal.
Key skills, abilities and work styles required:
Operational Duties:
- Operate heavy machinery including excavators (amphibious and standard), TLBs, and similar equipment as required.
- Conduct daily pre- and post-operation inspections, including checks on lights, horns, seatbelts, hydraulics, and general functionality.
- Prepare equipment by warming up engines and testing controls before use.
- Perform excavation for dam construction, maintenance, vegetation clearing, soil removal, and earth shaping.
- Operate safely on varied terrain including uneven ground, confined spaces, in water and water-adjacent areas.
- Monitor soil stability, water depth, identify site hazards, and adjust operations accordingly.
- Load and unload soil, rock, gravel, and debris into designated areas or vehicles.
- Minimise environmental impact through controlled excavation and responsible material placement.
- Maintain machinery by cleaning tracks, removing debris, lubricating components, and reporting defects as per operations manual.
- Park machinery securely and safely after use.
- Adhere strictly to PPE requirements, operational safety procedures, and hazard-reporting protocols.
Collaboration & Communication:
- Coordinate daily activities with the Irrigation Supervisor.
- Follow hand signals, radio communication, and verbal instructions accurately.

Candidates must be physically and mentally able to:- Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Lift and carry tools, equipment, and materials.
- Work alone for extended periods.
- Tolerate vibration, noise, and long hours of seated operation.
- Assist during occasional after-hours emergencies requiring machinery operation.
- Swim (as work will occur near or over water).
