SUMMARY:
QUARRYING BACKGROUND (OR SIMILAR)

POSITION INFO:

EE Appointment.

Join subsidiary of local Holding Company that has several fellow Subsidiaries in SA with the ultimate Holding Company being in USA (and dual reporting to Europe & USA).  This Company is a leading supplier of specialised industrial minerals which is high volume and low value and has serviced the South African and Sub Saharan market for many decades.  In addition to having several very small to medium sized mining sites in SA and each is controlled by a Mine Manager (who often uses Contractors instead of permanent staff), these industrial minerals are also sourced both locally and internationally.  The industrial minerals (usually wet clay) mined at the respective sites are sent to the Johannesburg Plant for processing and then distributed directly to the Customer.  This candidate, who must be a Geologist, will be responsible for all mining activities and will have one subordinate (Geologist) reporting to him/her in addition to the Mine Managers at site.  The primary responsibility is to manage this small team to ensure efficient and timeous production of raw industrial minerals which have to be supplied to the central processing facility in Johannesburg.  In addition, the candidate must ensure that each Mine has sufficient reserves for at least ten years and that it meets specified standards.  The candidate will be reporting to the MD.

Key performance areas, inter alia, include:

  • Manage, mentor and guide the Mine Managers noting that many of them are not sophisticated or highly educated and have grown into their positions at their small Mines.  The smallest have only a few Contractors and the largest site have up to 90 permanent and contract staff.  This means that the GM often travels to the various sites and sleeps over at least one week in the month.
  • Ensure full compliance to all statutory requirements & applicable laws, regulation, charters and DMR requirements, Codes of Practice, Social and Labour Plan.  This is done together with the relevant Mine Managers and HR Manager.  Naturally there is a close liaison with the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR).  It should be noted that audits happen regularly and it is necessary to prepare for all third party legal liability.
  • To ensure that there is enough stock at the Mines at all times so that the Processing Plant will be able to operate continuously.  Therefore, Mine Planning and Mining Campaigns must always be done timeously before stock runs out.  This also includes arranging Environmental Management Plan being drafted for site.
  • Further to the above, the candidate must ensure all exploration is up to date and therefore the need to formulate Exploration Prospect Plans for minerals are identified in the Company’s strategic plan.  This includes the Budget and Capital Expenditure (CAPEX).  Naturally, the need to set for potential ore body requirements in terms of size, location and quality.  The exploration must always be done in compliance with the various laws legislated in SA.
  • Compile the Mine’s and Geology Departments Budget and present CAPEX proposals to the MD and Executive and at all times prioritising SHEQ and promoting continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements:

  • Ideally MSc. and must have a major in Geology with 8 years mining experience which can either be as Project Geologist or similar and 5 years at Management level.  If the candidate has a miniumum B.Sc. Honours qualification in Geology, then this must be coupled with direct experience in quarrying or similar activities and upto Management level (this may even include being a Quarry Manager). In addition, the candidate’s experience may include several years in open-cast mining and processing plants.
  • Applicable mining-related legislation and dealing with MPRDA, Mine Health and Safety Act, NEMA,   OSH Act and MHSA.  Also knowledge of labour legislation as well as understanding of relevant minerals.
  • Ability to problem solve, make decisions, work independently, be decisive, analytical, energetic & self-starter.

Apply on-line or alternatively phone Gerald Lilian on (011)-----.
