General Manager

Introduction

A manufacturing company situated in Johannesburg is seeking a GM to champion the efficient functionality of the business unit in SA and enforce business development strategies.

 

Reports to:

  • Commercial Director: Western Europe

Direct Reports:

  • Sales Managers
  • Product Managers Department
  • Sales/Commercial

 

Role Summary

To ensure efficient organisation and functionality of the Foundry Business Unit SA in line with the business direction of foundry Europe and SA local business practice and ethics.

 

Qualifications and Experience

Required Minimum Education / Training

  • A relevant Engineering or Refractory Qualification or equivalent NQF 8/9 qualification will be preferable.

 

Required Minimum Work Experience

  • 10 - 15 years General Management experience at a Foundry Installation or equivalent, Production/Manufacturing and Sales experience.
  • 3- 5 years project management-, and People Management will be beneficial.
  • A proven track record of achieving results based on the Key deliverables in the Foundry industry.

Key Performance Areas

Strategic

  • Lead the organisation into continued market dominance, greater growth and profitability, by implementing a style of management which embodies strategic vision and which encourages innovation and the initiation of new and better ways of doing things.
  • Responsible for achieving the Organisational Strategy, striving to maintain the company as a significant player in the foundry market.
  • Accountable to adapt the Organisational Strategy and implement in the local business environment and landscape, considering the legal and other regulatory, as well as the labour specific factors of the country.
  • Develop and deliver on the company’s strategic plan in the most effective and efficient manner;
  • Accountable to focus the local Strategy to facilitate the best possible company performance.
  • Ensure that the company’s culture aligns with its values, principles and practices.

Commercial

  • Instil a New Business development mindset in all sales staff.
  • Evaluate, monitor and report all new business opportunities in relation to competitors and market trends.
  • Establish credibility and develop relationships with the company's key customers to maintain market share.
  • Negotiate contracts with customers and suppliers.
  • Ensure that customer satisfaction objectives are met.
  • Ensure that all product and service non-compliances are recorded and investigated.

Operational

  • Accountable for the overall performance of the company and for the day-to-day running and management of the company’s business;
  • Responsible to consistently review and analyse business performance, re-allocation of resources and improving manufacturing processes.
  • Responsible for achieving objectives by implementing innovative continuous improvement initiatives, transforming the business to high levels of effectiveness and efficiencies.
  • Operational perspective –instilling continuous process improvement thinking in the organisation.
  • Financial (Budget) – COI annual target, achieve free operational cashflow days target, compile and forecast annual sales (direct-, project- and service contract sales) budget, cash receivables age analyses.
  • Report on monthly/quarterly/annual financial achievement against budget.
  • Motivate the company’s employees;
  • Reporting appropriate data back into the company management team.
  • To act according to the local legal requirements
  • To comply with group and local company policies and procedures
  • To take decisions which are acceptable for the company’s benefit and within the terms of reference that the company provides.

People Management

  • Execute skills and competency gap analyses and implement appropriate training and development intervention to close the gaps.
  • Responsible to transfer knowledge to staff who are required to operate in specific technical and sales functions.
  • Leading the skills & key competency development of all staff and training.
  • Implementing a coaching and mentoring mentality in the organisation

Health & Safety

  • Ensure that trials & projects are performed in accordance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 requirements as well as the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act.
  • Adhere and perform duties in accordance with the company’s Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality policies, procedures and requirements.
  • Communicate all safety related aspects which may have a negative impact on the business.
