JOB PURPOSE:

Our client invites suitably qualified candidates (CA) to apply for a Head of Finance position based at their head office in Cape Town’s northern suburbs. The role is responsible for providing strategic and operational financial leadership to the business unit, the management team and the Group Finance function.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:

  • Chartered Accountant (SA) – absolute ESSENTIAL
  • 5-10 years Financial Management experience
  • · Ideal industry background is retail or logistics (or a very fast paced industry)
  • Experience at Senior management level
  • Operational Financial management experience with some experience to Strategic Management
  • Good IT and software skills
  • Adequate Risk Management experience
  • Ability to handle pressure, take ownership and accountability and drive good commercial outcomes with the managing executive
  • Great business acumen and general knowledge of business outside of Finance sphere
  • Digital mindset

STRATEGIC FOCUS

  • As part of the Executive Management Team the candidate is required to:

o Provide strategic financial support to the ME and the Management team to assist in ensuring that the company achieves its strategic goals.

o Provide Commercial and business input into all aspects of the business across Operations, Sales, HR, IT, Legal and other areas of the business.

o Implement a Finance Business partnering mind-set that supports the ME to drive the business plan and outcomes for the BU in line with the agreed strategy as signed off by the Board and the Shareholders.

o Focus on achievement of financial targets and business imperatives that will ensure that the business plan is delivered upon.

o Develop a strong team to ensure succession planning and high quality of Financial services is provided to the BU, The Operations Committee, The Board and the Shareholders.

o Ensure constant communication and information sharing with Opco, the Board and the Shareholders where appropriate at all times.

  • Ensure a level of professionalism in the performance of all financial functions is implemented

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

  • Treasury Management: Ensure that Cash flows are forecasted accurately and that Cash surpluses are managed appropriately with all stakeholders. Ensure that Free Cash Flow is optimised throughout the business
  • Financial Accounting: Ensure timeous and accurate financial records are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting standards, the company’s accounting policies and procedures and in line with IFRS.
  • Internal Controls: Ensure that adequate Internal Controls are implemented, maintained and monitored across all areas of the business.
  • Asset Management: Ensure adequate record keeping and the safe guarding of assets within the business as well as appropriate accounting treatment.
  • Ensure that the principles of good corporate governance are applied at all times.
  • Internal & External Audit: Plan, organise and control all Internal and External Audit engagements and audit plans and interactions. Report appropriately on these matters to the Audit & Risk Committee. Ensure a clean and effective annual audit and tax audit.

  • Balance Sheet Management: Ensure adequate management of Capex, Net Working Capital and Working Capital Cycle is maintained and improved upon. All accruals and Provisions are adequately accounted for on a monthly basis. All balance sheet reconciliations are performed adequately and reviewed for accuracy.
  • ROI/ROA: Ensure that appropriate costings and business case preparation for new initiatives are performed, and make recommendations based on sound financial outcomes and business acumen.
  • Cost Control: Ensure effective cost management across the BU to optimise cost structures and make recommendations to manage costs in line with business activity where appropriate.
  • Credit Control: Manage and control the Credit management procedures and policies and ensure that collection targets are set, maintained and achieved. Ensure that legal debts, write offs are minimised and that all impaired debts are adequately provisioned.

FINANCIAL REPORTING

  • Monthly Management Pack: Ensure the effective and timeous production of monthly management accounts and presentation to Opco.
  • Other reporting: Ensure continuous improvement of the daily, weekly and monthly reporting across the BU to ensure that management has timeous, accurate and value adding information to assist in decision making.

BUDGETING, FORECASTING AND ANNUAL BUSINESS PLAN

  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Own and manage the entire Budget and Forecast process in line with Board and Shareholder requirements. Prepare all relevant budgets and forecasts in conjunction with the Management team for presentation to Opco and Board.
  • Business Plan: Co-ordinate and drive the Annual Business plan & Strategy update process together with the ME to ensure input from all stakeholders is received and translate that into Financial outputs that can be utilised for measurement. Highlight risks and opportunities in respect of the achievement of the business plan.
  • Business plan will include Income Statement, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow, Investments and CAPEX, HR development, statistics and adherence to strategy

RISK MANAGEMENT

  • Risk registers: Understand and update all Risk Registers on a quarterly basis to ensure that all Strategic, Operational and Financial Risks are identified and documented in the Registers.
  • Risk Mitigation: Document and agree with the various departments the risks identified along with the mitigating controls and assist with implementation of the controls to reduce overall risk.
  • Risk reporting: Produce quarterly risk reports that are presented to the ARC fort signoff and approval and recommendation to the Board.
  • Risk Provision: Ensure all identified risks are appropriately communicated and provided for.
  • Insurance: Control the Annual Insurance Renewal with the Brokers and Underwriters and ensure that adequate Insurance cover is maintained across the BU. Ensure that Claims are submitted that align with the cover taken, and adequate Insurance reporting is performed at the required Intervals to the ARC and Board

HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

  • Implement, monitor and control a Finance Business Partner culture with the team and broader finance community.
  • Ensure that the Finance team is adequately structured and resourced from a capability and a capacity perspective to deliver upon the expectations of a world class Finance Team.
  • Lead and manage the financial department promoting the achievement of planned divisional objectives and targets by ensuring a high performance culture.
  • Ensure that staffs roles and responsibilities are clarified, performance objectives are set and managed and conduct performance reviews in accordance with policies and procedures and take corrective actions where necessary.
  • Ensure that training and development needs are identified and actioned.
  • Take ownership of your own growth and development needs and ensure planned actions are affected.
  • Ensure that succession plans are in place and implemented.
  • Build a pro-active environment where the managers can take responsibility for results.
  • Ensure that Employment Equity targets are set and achieved .
  • Ensure identification of critical skills essential for sustainability of service delivery and the development of succession plans; and give feedback to relevant stakeholders.
