Head: Actuarial Assumption & Model Development Validation

SUMMARY:
We are seeking a Head: Actuarial Assumption & Model Development Validation to provide specialist leadership in reviewing and validating actuarial assumptions, IFRS 17 and SAM basis-setting, and Prophet/ResQ model development across key Balance Sheet Management functions. This role plays a critical part in strengthening actuarial governance, ensuring modelling accuracy, and supporting high‑quality financial reporting.

POSITION INFO:

Assumption & Model Reviews
Prepare and execute assumption and model review workplans.
Review key actuarial assumptions (including lapses, mortality, expenses) used in long contract boundary models.
Pressure‑test contract boundary assumptions across IFRS 17 and SAM environments.
Modelling & Validation
Perform independent validation of Prophet models (gross and financial reinsurance) for IFRS 17 and SAM.
Review model outputs including ORSA projections.
Validate IBNR triangulations and related methodologies.
Results & Reporting
Conduct high-level review of IFRS 17 and SAM annual results.
Document and communicate all validation findings to Balance Sheet Management and relevant stakeholders.
Governance & Oversight
Collaborate with the outsourced Head of Actuarial Function, providing confidence around validation activities and their outputs.
Strengthen governance across assumption setting and model development frameworks.

Skills & Experience
10 years post‑qualification actuarial experience, with at least 5 years in senior validation, modelling, or assumption governance.
Strong technical expertise in:
Prophet model development
IFRS 17 and SAM valuation principles
Financial reinsurance mechanics
Ability to lead complex actuarial validation activities independently.
Strong communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.

Qualifications
Fellow of the Actuarial Society of South Africa (FASSA) — Life Fellowship preferred.
Life Practising Certificate (advantageous).
