Laboratory Administrator (12 Months Contract) DST/NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical TB Research (CBTBR)

POSITION INFO:

Main purpose of the job:

• To provide financial and administrative support to a research team discovering and developing new tools to address the Covid and TB Epidemics; as well as provide support to a team of Scientists on the various clinical projects carried out at the CBTBR

Location:

• University of the Witwatersrand and NHLS, Braamfontein - Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Responsible for obtaining quotations, procurement, and receipting of goods and services for the BSL2 and BSL3 laboratories
• Monitor and provide regular feedback to the line manager on laboratory operations
• Liaise with the cleaner to ensure all laboratories, offices, and communal areas are cleaned and maintained
• Attend safety meetings, provide feedback to the line manager for implementation of any additional processes to ensure safety adherence in accordance with NHLS and Wits
• Assist with the shipment of laboratory samples/strains, i.e. arrange appropriate courier companies
• Provide administrative support to the HOD and the laboratory staff
• Manage local and international grants i.e. payments and claim the payroll
• Responsible for managing storerooms i.e. tracking all orders and following up with suppliers, pre-planning of stock items
• Responsible for the management and servicing of laboratory equipment

Required minimum education and training:

• Diploma in Laboratory Administration, Laboratory Management, or Finance

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum of 1 – 2 years experience in a BSL2 molecular biology laboratory

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• A sound understanding of requirements for Molecular Biology/Genetics/Laboratory operations would be advantageous
• Experience with financial accounting software such as Oracle would be advantageous
• Experience in the management of the BSL laboratory would be advantageous
• Experience in bookkeeping and administration
• The incumbent should be computer literate
• Scientific and technical knowledge in the areas of molecular biology, biochemistry, microbiology or mycobacteriology
• Effective time management and communication skills
• Should possess good interpersonal and organizational skills
• Able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Able to work under pressure and be pro-active
