Laboratory Assistant (12 Months Fixed Term Contract) Wits VIDA

Main purpose of the job:

• Supporting and maintaining GCLP compliance of the laboratory

Location:

• VIDA - Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital - Soweto – Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Adherence to the principles of good clinical and laboratory practice (GCLP) and ensuring laboratory cleanliness and safety Storing the samples as per SOP with the entry of sample information into the various information systems
• Routine monitoring and maintenance on the equipment used as required (and documented) as per GCLP
• Preparation of media and reagents to specification according to the various SOPs
• Stocktaking of consumables/reagents used and requesting the ordering of items in good time
• Appropriate management, storage, and disposal of bio-hazardous waste and toxic materials
• Preparation and shipment of clinical material as per sponsor requirements
• Preparation and testing of laboratory reagents
• Ensuring lab cleanliness and order
• Conserving the accuracy of samples being archived in ultra-low storage through continuous freezer and database checks

Required minimum education and training:

• Btech in Science or related field

Required minimum work experience:

• Previous laboratory experience and knowledge of GCLP & IATA would be an advantage

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Comfortable working with potentially infectious material
• Good verbal and written communication skills as well as high levels of computer literacy
• High-level problem-solving ability needed
• Effective self-management with a conscientious work ethic as well as above-average attention to detail
• Motivated, organized, systematic and professional
• Should be able to work under pressure with efficient multitasking
• Must be willing to work after hours when needed
