The University of Fort Hare seeks to appoint an appropriately qualified and experienced candidate for the vacant position.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES

Doctoral degree in Education (PhD or D.Ed.) with focus on or specialization in literacy or language education.
Professional teaching qualification.
Research experience supported by a publication record in DHET accredited journals.
A minimum of five years teaching bilingual (isiXhosa & English) literacy and language at primary school level, Foundation Phase.

THE FOLLOWING COMPETENCIES WILL BE A FURTHER ADVANTAGE:

Experience teaching (or supporting teachers) in isiXhosa (or related Nguni) medium of instruction foundation phase classrooms.
Experience in developing isiXhosa & English bilingual curriculum and materials
Ability to mentor classroom teachers in home language literacy in the foundation phase.
Experience in designing, implementing and evaluating teacher professional development (both initial teacher education and/or in-service teacher education.)

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

Design and conduct school-based intervention and applied research focused on bilingual literacy and language development in early grade classrooms
Participate in NMI research and publishing activities
Participate in fundraising activities for the NMI
Teach undergraduate, in-service and postgraduate students in the area of IsiXhosa or any other Nguni language & English language
Support, mentor and assess students during school-based work integrated modules
Support and supervise postgraduate students in the area of isiXhosa or any Nguni language
