JOB DESCRIPTION:

The University of Fort Hare seeks to appoint an appropriately qualified and experienced candidate for the vacant position.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES
  • Doctoral degree in Education (PhD or D.Ed.) with focus on or specialization in literacy or language education.
  • Professional teaching qualification.
  • Research experience supported by a publication record in DHET accredited journals.
  • A minimum of five years teaching bilingual (isiXhosa & English) literacy and language at primary school level, Foundation Phase.
THE FOLLOWING COMPETENCIES WILL BE A FURTHER ADVANTAGE:
  • Experience teaching (or supporting teachers) in isiXhosa (or related Nguni) medium of instruction foundation phase classrooms.
  • Experience in developing isiXhosa & English bilingual curriculum and materials
  • Ability to mentor classroom teachers in home language literacy in the foundation phase.
  • Experience in designing, implementing and evaluating teacher professional development (both initial teacher education and/or in-service teacher education.)

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Design and conduct school-based intervention and applied research focused on bilingual literacy and language development in early grade classrooms
  • Participate in NMI research and publishing activities
  • Participate in fundraising activities for the NMI
  • Teach undergraduate, in-service and postgraduate students in the area of IsiXhosa or any other Nguni language & English language
  • Support, mentor and assess students during school-based work integrated modules
  • Support and supervise postgraduate students in the area of isiXhosa or any Nguni language
