JOB SUMMARY:
Lecturer/Senior Lecturer - Classical Studies

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Main Job Objectives

All academics are responsible for the dissemination of knowledge (teaching and learning), creation of knowledge (research) and community engagement, recognising that there are differences in the execution of these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties. Academics are also expected to assume some administrative, management and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty and/or University level.

Description of Key Roles and Responsibilities and Standards Expected

Teaching and Learning including:

  • Engaging in curriculum development
  • Facilitation of learning
  • Assessment of learning
  • Evaluation of teaching
  • Support of students in their studies
  • Supervision of post-graduate students (where the person has the appropriate qualification to do this)
  • Assume leadership responsibilities as they related to teaching and learning

Research including:

  • Undertaking independent research and publishing research;
  • Participating in national and/or international fora to share research results;
  • Identifying and accessing funding sources to support own and where feasible, student research; and
  • Assumes leadership responsibilities as they relate to research

Community Engagement including:

  • This may be associated with teaching and learning through credit bearing service learning (SL) courses or non-credit bearing community engaged learning activities, or associated with research through engaged research

Administrative and/or Leadership responsibilities may include:

  • Assuming administrative and/or leadership duties in the department such as course coordinator; co-ordination of particular programmes e.g., PhD, Masters programmes; coordination of particular research projects; tutor selection and coordination
  • Serving on departmental, faculty and/or University committees

Professional Involvement:

In addition, it is understood that the academic will contribute to the discipline and profession through:

  • Being of service to other universities e.g., external examining, assisting with curriculum reviews, organising of conferences, collaborations on inter-university projects
  • Being of service to professional bodies e.g., servicing on national bodies, journal servicing (being editor or referee)
  • Being of service to other stakeholders such as government or NGOs e.g., servicing on advisory bodies, contributing to policy formulation and review

Job Requirements

Educational Qualifications and Experience

For Lecturer

  • At least a Masters’ degree in Classical Studies, Latin or Greek, preferably with substantial progress towards completing a PhD
  • Some teaching experience is required. Should be acquainted with online/ blended teaching, testing and marking or be willing to immediately acquire these skills once on the job through workshop attendance or other developmental opportunities
  • Ability to teach undergraduate modules on the history, literature, art and thought of ancient societies, and at least one classical language (i.e., Classical Latin or Ancient Greek)
  • An interest, and, preferably, experience, in curriculum development
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate students as research supervision at Hons, Masters and PhD level as per qualification will be required once in the job
  • A research interest in the ancient civilisations of the African continent and/or the reception of Classics in Africa
  • A research interest in the ancient civilisations of the African continent and/or the reception of Classics in Africa
  • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal)

For Senior Lecturer

  • A PhD in Classics, Latin or Greek
  • Relevant teaching experience at the undergraduate and post graduate levels is required. Should be acquainted with online/ blended teaching, testing and marking or be willing to immediately acquire these skills once on the job through workshop attendance or other developmental opportunities
  • Experience in teaching, researching and supervising in the disciplinary areas of Classical Studies (ancient history, literature, art and thought), and at least one classical language (i.e. Classical Latin or Ancient Greek), but preferably both
  • An interest, and, preferably, experience, in curriculum development
  • Research supervision of at least Master’s degrees to completion required
  • A research interest in the ancient civilisations of the African continent and/or the reception of Classics in Africa
  • Emerging national research profile in the discipline
  • Track record of administration, management and/or leadership roles (leadership roles may be informal)

Competencies

  • Management of large and small classes, including tutorial groups and writing skills programmes
  • An ability to translate practical experience into curricula
  • Ability to relate theory to practice
  • Integration of own research into teaching
  • Ability to develop a positive rapport and promote an affirming relationship with students
  • A willingness to take on course coordination and other departmental portfolios
