Job Purpose:
To be held accountable for the management of the Nursing Unit encompassing quality patient care, financial and human resources.
Key Responsibilities:
Patient Care:
- Assessment, planning, implement, evaluate and maintain nursing standards thereby ensuring optimum quality patient care.
- Liaison with multi-disciplinary team members, regarding management of patient care.
- Actively monitor patient condition to ensure the appropriate Level of Care is maintained at all times.
Customer Service:
- Comprehensive management of customer relations in the unit through clinical ward rounds, patient questionnaires, verbal and written complaints
- Ensure completion of patient questionnaires.
- the satisfaction of health professional(s) with the service delivery of the nursing unit.
- Hold meetings with health professional(s) and other service providers as directed by the Nursing Services Manager.
Communication:
- Implement and maintain effective communication between Employees, Patients, Doctors and Relatives.
- Communicate daily with the case manager.
- Actively communicate the funder requirements to the multidisciplinary team.
- Ensure that information, feedback from meetings /an instruction from management is communicated to the entire employee in the unit.
Financial Control:
- Management of time and attendance including leave planning, absenteeism, late coming and overtime
- Participate in budget preparation as directed by the nursing services manager
- Manage and prepare acuities report for unit and compare to budget, i.e. staffing costs, absenteeism, level of care, patient needs and Rand Per Patient Day
- Ensure employees are proficient in handling all equipment and maintain training record.
- Ensure that medical equipment is maintained and serviced on a frequent basis as per supplier specification.
- Supervise the management of stock.
- Be actively involved in stock taking
- Audit and release discharged files to the administration department within 24 hours.
- Management of assets by ensuring that asset register is reconciled monthly.
Policy, Procedure and Legislation:
- Develop unit specific policies and procedures in relation with AHC Policies and Procedures.
- Comply with all legislation regulating nursing practice.
- Comply with legislation relating to the Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Labour Relations Act, Employment Equity Act, Skills Development Act and Nursing Act
- Ensure adherence to AHC policies and procedures
- In consultation with the Nursing Services Manager review all unit specific policies and standard operating procedures and clinical guidelines every two years or as required by legislation.
- Ensure that all units related activities are carried out within the framework of ethical and legal standards.
- Monitor activities of nursing employee to ensure compliance to the Nursing Act.
- Keep an updated file of all applicable legislation and policies and make it accessible to nursing employee
Quality Assurance and Marketing:
- Advocate for the patient at all times.
- Determine the expectation and needs of internal and external customers and provide nursing services accordingly.
- Address customers’ complaints and/or enquiries within your Scope of Practice and escalate unresolved complaints and/or enquiries.
- Ensure monthly audits on all aspects relating to patient care in accordance with AHC policies and procedures and the national core standards.
- Monitor and audit medication administration and address any deviations from Doctors’ orders and/or Company Policies and Procedures.
- Report and document all adverse incidences immediately. Complete investigation of incident within 72 hours.
- Develop, implement and monitor action plans to address patient care delivery gaps.
- Ensure successful completion of Quality Improvement Programs in line with AHC Policies and Procedures and National Core Standards.
- Ensure that Infection prevention and control standards are maintained.
- Keep management informed of happenings within the unit which could have potential media interest and impact on the hospital in a positive or negative light.
Administration:
- Implement and ensure adherence to acuities as calculated based on the patients’ Clinical condition and Level of Care.
- Perform the skill audit of the employee
- Compilation of training programme and ensure that in service training is conducted according to the AHC policies and procedures
- Check and Balance drug books to physical stock on hand and investigate all discrepancies.
- Audit the emergency trolley
- Prepare and analyse statistical reports as requested by Management.
- Compile reports on audits performed and submit to Management.
- Compile and maintain an asset register
- Ensure patient records are correctly maintained and confidentiality is kept.
- Ensure that private paying patient files are completed and submitted to Billings for completion prior to patient leaving the ward.
- Compile monthly duty rosters and ensure accurate working hours.
- Disaster and contingency plans monitored in the ward and hospital as per requirement from department of health.
Education, Experience and Professional Licensing:
- Degree or Diploma in nursing
- Current registration with SANC
- Relevant experience in nursing to meet the critical outputs
- Proven leadership and people management skills
- Basic understanding of labour legislation, financial and chain management principles
- Driver’s license and ability to travel
