Medical Laboratory Technician (12 Months Fixed Term Contract) Wits VIDA

Main purpose of the job:

• Handling, processing, storing, and logging of specified samples according to the various standard operating procedures or protocols as well as performing any accompanying maintenance and administrative processes related to this function

Location:

• Wits VIDA – Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital – Soweto- Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Adherence to the principles of good clinical and laboratory practice (GCLP) and ensuring laboratory cleanliness and safety
• Receiving, processing, and preparing aliquots of samples received, according to the various Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and/or trial protocols
• Storing the samples as per SOP with the entry of sample information into the various information systems
• Accurate completion and capture of information from the sample requisition forms received
• Continuous freezer and database checks to ensure the accuracy of sample locations
• Routine monitoring and maintenance on the equipment used as required (and documented) as per GCLP
• Preparation of media and reagents to specification according to the various SOPs
• Stocktaking of consumables/reagents used and requesting the ordering of items in good time
• Ensuring lab cleanliness and order
• Appropriate management, storage, and disposal of bio-hazardous waste and toxic materials
• Preparation and shipment of clinical material as per sponsor requirements
• Carry out any additional duties as required by the academic staff within the group
• Must be willing to work flexible hours and possible weekends, if required

Required minimum education and training:

• BSc/BTech
• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) essential

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum 1 years experience in a clinical pathology laboratory or research laboratory

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Must be willing to work after hours when needed
• Knowledge of the use of chemical substances, radioactivity, safe laboratory practice, and knowledge of health and safety regulations
• Self-starter with excellent time management skills and the ability to take initiative
• Good communication & training skills
• Ability to organize own workload under the direction of academic staff
• Ability to work as an individual and part of a team
• Adaptability, high degree of technical competence, ability to multi-task to meet all research needs
• Operation of specialized equipment, requiring specialist training
• Computer literacy
• Able to work shifts
