Medical Laboratory Technician (Repository & Shipping) 2 Year Contract (Renewable based on performance) Wits CLS

Main purpose of the job:

• Co-ordination of sample registration on LDMS system and retrieval of samples according to client-specific requests operating within GCLP practice and maintaining quality assurance

Location:

• Spencer Lister Building, Braamfontein - Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

Log, label, store, and destruction of samples

• Apply quality control to check and ensure that the requisition form and sample are matched
• Aliquoting of specimens as per study-specific SOPs
• Input data onto the LDMS system
• Allocate sample position in freezers on LDMS (for retrieval purposes)
• Preparation of sample specimens for destruction as per sponsor requirements/instructions

Specimen receiving and Shipping management

• Receive a list of samples to be retrieved for internal use or for shipping
• Sample retrieval, preparation, and shipping to other sites for testing (locally or overseas)
• Prepare cryo boxes for shipment
• Make arrangements for shipping via courier services
• Ensure correct application of all policies and procedures in compliance with shipping and repository requirements

Housekeeping

• Ensure daily maintenance of freezers to ensure good working order
• Sign log sheets to ensure that instruments are maintained in proper working order
• Ensure general cleanliness of work areas and neatness around the repository including proper storage of ancillary equipment when not in use

Quality control and updating of standard operating procedures

• Perform regular Quality Control of stored samples
• Respond and resolve all LDMS/LIMS issues and respond to queries from the study sponsor in a timely manner
• Review and implement changes to standard operating procedures when required in order to ensure the repository and shipping support functions are constantly of high quality, cost-effective and safe provision of service

Required minimum education and training:

• NDip or BSc in a science-related field

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum 2 years of experience

Professional body registration:

• Registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Medical Laboratory Technician/Technologist/Scientist is advantageous

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) courses
• An LDMS-certified user of the system
• IATA certification (shipping certification)
• Experience in a Clinical Trial environment will be advantageous
• The incumbent is required to physically handle specimens and set freezer temperatures which may expose him/her to liquid nitrogen splashes and freezer burn
• Will be working in a -20 C cold room
• The job requires the incumbent to be on standby 24 hours a day in order to respond to freezer alarms outside normal working hours
