Medical Laboratory Technicians x 2 (12 Months Contract)

Main purpose of the job:

• Perform laboratory tests and experiments in order to produce reliable and precise data to support scientific investigations

Location:

• University of the Witwatersrand, Medical School - Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Previous experience in molecular biology techniques including cloning, plasmid propagation and isolation, maintenance of mammalian cell cultures, real-time polymerase chain reactions, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, processing of blood/serum samples, flow cytometry, and liquid chromatography would be favorable
• Accurate recording, interpretation, and reporting of results to the research team
• Preparation of media and reagents to specification according to the various SOPs
• Adherence to the principles of good clinical and laboratory practice (GCLP) and ensuring laboratory cleanliness and safety
• Receiving, processing, and preparing aliquots of samples received, according to the various Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Routine monitoring, cleaning, and maintenance of standard laboratory equipment, for example, centrifuges, incubators, pH meters, fridges, and freezers
• Stocktaking of consumables/reagents used and requesting the ordering of items
• Appropriate management, storage, and disposal of bio-hazardous waste and toxic materials
• Preparation and shipment of material as required

Required minimum education and training:

• BScHons/MSc/BTech in Biomedical science, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, or similar field

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum 3 years experience in a research laboratory or industry
• Prior experience in mammalian cell culture and animal husbandry would be an advantage

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Knowledge of the use of chemical substances, biohazardous substances, and safe laboratory practices and knowledge of health and safety regulations
• To be mindful of confidentiality
• Excellent time management skills and ability to take initiative
• Good communication and training skills
• Ability to organize own workload
• Ability to work as an individual and part of a team
• Computer literacy
• Be tactful and respectful
• Good administrative skills
• Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
