A Medical Officer (Doctor) Senior vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) in Soweto, Johannesburg - Gauteng.

POSITION INFO:

Background

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (Wits PHRU) was established in 1996. The Perinatal HIV Research Unit has been involved in research, training, policy formation, and advocacy in issues concerning HIV-positive women and their children.

In recent years the work of the unit has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, to include treatment trials in adults and children, prevention research, psychosocial research, and policy development. In addition, the Unit has developed an HIV vaccine clinical trials unit (HVCTU) and started with HIV Vaccine Trials back in 2001.

The unit is recognized nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of research and policy in the area of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. It has also developed a reputation as a leading African research unit for clinical trials in adults and children with HIV, with one of the largest cohorts.

Main purpose of the job

• To provide staff leadership and comprehensive medical care to participants on various studies related to the prevention of infectious diseases, including COVID-19 clinical trials in humans

Location

• PHRU, Kliptown, Soweto 

Key performance areas 

• Lead protocols as principal investigator including clinical trial oversight or management

• Provision of clinical care to patients and participants

• Accurate and comprehensive medical record-keeping

• Staff management

• To assist with the day-to-day running of the study and manage clinic flow

• To review and edit source documents

• To conduct training for sponsor and protocol-related documents

• To perform financial oversight functions including review of purchase orders, payment vouchers, 

  participant reimbursement verification

Required minimum education and training 

• MBChB/MBBCh

Professional body registration

• HPCSA registration

Required minimum work experience

• At least 3 years of work experience in a clinical research environment
• Worked as a principal or sub-investigator on 2 completed clinical trials

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities

• Registered with MPS

• Attention to detail

• Respect for participant altruism in volunteering for clinical trails

• Excellent clinical skills and attention to detail

• Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification
• Empathy and sensitivity toward people from key populations
• Research experience or willingness to learn
• Computer literacy
• Ability and willingness to work on COVID-19 related studies in accordance with PHRU COVID-19 regulations
