A Medical Officer (Doctor) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Wits Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit (Wits VIDA) in Soweto, Johannesburg - Gauteng.

POSITION INFO:

Background

The Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics (VIDA) Research Unit of the University of the Witwatersrand, formerly RMPRU (Respiratory and Meningeal Pathogens Research Unit) has for over 20 years conducted numerous studies to assess the burden of and to prevent vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD).

Current studies and projects include infant rotavirus and BCG trials, immunizing pregnant women to protect their infants against disease (including influenza, Group B streptococcus, and respiratory syncytial virus), and the Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance (CHAMPS) initiatives.

In 2020, VIDA commenced two international trials on COVID-19 vaccines amongst several other COVID-19 studies. World Health Organization position papers directly refer to the work conducted by RMPRU and have used such data generated to inform policy and recommendations for vaccine implementation globally and here in South Africa.

By combining clinical, microbiological, and epidemiological expertise in an African setting, the unit has made significant contributions in vaccine development against the leading respiratory and enteric pathogens contributing to under-5 childhood morbidity and mortality in Africa and other low and middle-income countries.

Main purpose of the job

• To manage and lead the clinical trial team and research activities and to provide health care to patients participating in clinical trials according to study protocols

Key performance areas

Patient Care

• Schedule patient appointments through respective admin teams as specified per project
• Verify participant vital signs as indicated by respective team members and/ or conduct vital sign checks on patients as required
• Provide examination in line with GCP ensuring protocol adherence
• Apply correct prognosis/ Diagnosis taking all information and tests into account ensuring appropriate treatment
• Apply holistic patient management and care
• Prescribe medication/s as necessary ensuring protocol adherence
• Provide participant education and as required counseling
• Clinical Trial oversight – Making decisions regarding enrolment and screening procedures ensuring all participants receive the best possible care and are treated in accordance with GCP guidelines
• Assist with Management or patient/ participant flow within the clinic thereby enhancing customer satisfaction

Administration and Data Management

• Protocol specific – update-source document per participant visit
• Complete accurate and comprehensive medical record-keeping, inclusive of reviewing of results for all participants
• Quality Check of Source Documents during participant visit ensuring any outstanding components are proactively addressed
• Facilitation and resolution of queries from Data Management and Internal/ External Monitors within required timeframes
• Provide QC for phlebotomy that has been conducted per participant visit
• Complete Data Clarification Form – (DCF) for info that has been supplied from the Lab
• Update CRF after each visit
• Monthly meetings, clinical reporting monthly, weeks staff meetings as required by project and line manager
• Assist in the writing of manuscripts, protocols and grants as required and in conjunction with your respective line manager and/or P.I.
• Assist in Data Management and analysis including protocol writing, as and when required

Stakeholder Relations

• Actively participate in required monthly (or as needed) sponsor calls providing feedback on the Project Status
• Prepare and facilitate presentations for sponsors and other stakeholders as requested
• Attend to required CPD engagements and if so required participate in the lecture schedule to up-skill clinicians within the unit
• Participate in all phases/ components of the research process from initiation to publication
• Provide support to other research sites where necessary e.g. Circumcision projects, Community outreach projects, staff training and implementation of protocols as required

Clinical Operations

• Actively participate in the operational running of the multiple clinics including but not limited to: Stock takes and day-to-day running of the same

Customer Service

• Act in a professional and friendly manner in all dealings with internal stakeholders
• Show a high level of customer centricity at all times

Required minimum education and training

• MBChB/MBBCh Degree

Required minimum work experience

• Minimum 2 years relevant work experience within a Clinical Research environment

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities

• Clinical trials experience, including protocol development, IRB Submissions, Trial planning and set-up
• Good Clinical Practice
• Computer literacy in MS Word and MS Excel
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team
