Medical Scientist (Senior) - 4 Months Contract - Mycology

Main purpose of the job:

• To perform laboratory diagnostic, surveillance, and research activities, with a specific focus on bioinformatics analysis and interpretation of data

Location:

• NICD – Sandringham - Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Perform routine diagnostic and surveillance tests analyses, including interpreting test results together with epidemiological data
• Interpret test results associated with outbreak investigations
• Perform routine laboratory equipment maintenance according to internal and external requirements
• Monitor and control laboratory stock levels
• Respond to and report quality control issues to the laboratory manager
• Run bioinformatics workflows and scripts to analyze next-generation sequencing data
• Training staff/students/collaborators with bioinformatics skills

Required minimum education and training:

• PhD degree
• HPCSA registration as a Medical Scientist is preferred but not essential

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum of 5 years experience working in a research/diagnostic laboratory

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Experience working in a microbiology/molecular biology laboratory
• Experience analyzing whole-genome sequencing data
• Training of technologists and scientists
• Good Laboratory Practice (GLP)
• Data capturing and management of data
• A team player
• A well-organized individual
• Show dedication and attention to detail
• Good time management
