Medical Technologist (12 Months Contract) Wits NICD

Main purpose of the job:

• To receive clinical samples and perform routine medical laboratory tests according to Standard Operating procedures (SOP’s)

Location:

• NICD – Sandringham – Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

• Perform instrument and manual tests
• Read slides under microscope and comment (morphology)
• Capture manual test results on laboratory information system (Disa)
• Follow up on incomplete tests and ensure completion
• Phone out abnormal results as required and interact with doctors/ nurses/ site coordinators to give explanations for abnormal results (within the scope of practice)
• Ensure maintenance is carried out where required
• Monitor and control stock levels
• Monitor and control workflows and turnaround times
• Respond to and report quality control issues to the laboratory manager
• Demonstrate cost consciousness and assists in meeting budgetary targets
• Troubleshoot
• Apply and interpret results of internal and external quality assessment tests
• Report quality-related problems and attempts to solve them and reports to laboratory manager
• Log, label, and store samples (LDMS) system
• Retrieve samples
• Assist with training of newly appointed medical technologists, student medical technicians, and student laboratory assistants
• Prepare and maintain procedures on instruction from the laboratory manager

Required minimum education and training:

• National Diploma in Medical Technology

Professional body registration:

• HPCSA Registration as Medical Technologist

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum of 1-3 years experience

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Attention to detail
• Ability to work independently
• Experience in molecular testing (Rt-PCR)
• The incumbent will be exposed to hazardous and infectious samples
• Must be able to meet turnaround times in a high-volume work environment
• Excellent communications skills with colleagues, manager,s and stakeholders
