SUMMARY:
Background: 

• Wits Diagnostic Innovation Hub (Wits DIH) is a new entity registered under the University Research Committee (URC), as well as the Faculty of Health Sciences, at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa

POSITION INFO:
Main purpose of the job:

• To receive, analyse, produce and interpret participant results from human specimens and to maintain the quality management system for the laboratory

• Parktown

• Verify if information on the specimen matches the laboratory requisition form
• Receive specimens and follow rejection criteria
• Data entry of specimens on LIMS according to defined protocols
• Separation and labelling specimens
• Generation of specimen worklists
• Generation of specimen referral lists
• Data capturing on LIMS
• Specimen storage on LDMS/LIMS
• PBMC specimen processing and storage

• Record keeping and archive of documents as directed by protocols
• Demonstrate cost consciousness and assists in meeting budgetary targets

• Check suitability of samples to be analysed
• Perform instrument and manual tests
• Analyse and interpret the results
• Capture manual test results on laboratory information system

• Perform QC checks on data entries
• Monitor temperature for freezers, fridges and testing and processing areas
• Perform equipment preventive maintenance and maintain records
• Monitor and control stock levels
• Monitor and control workflows and turnaround times
• Reports quality related problems and attempts to solve them and reports to laboratory manager
• Follow SOPs at all times
• Perform internal and external quality control in conjunction with colleagues
• Report all non-conformances within the QMS to management
• Review and implement changes to SOPs in order to ensure the laboratory is constantly able to provide a high quality, cost effective and correct results

• Quality Control of samples before shipments
• Respond to and report quality control issues to laboratory manager and project manager

• National Diploma in Biomedical Technology

• Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a Medical Technologist

• Registered with Health Professions Council of South Africa as Medical Technologist

• A clinical trial background / experience will be advantageous with pre-analytical experience
• Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) courses
• Exceptional organizational and administration skills with working knowledge of Microsoft Office and laboratory systems
• Meeting turnaround times is critical
• Ability to optimize processes to achieve maximum efficiencies and work under pressure
• Exposure to hazardous and infectious samples
• Work in a pressurised environment in meeting turnaround times in high volumes
• Liaise and maintain effective working relationships with external laboratories, Clinicians, Couriers, Medical Representatives, Equipment Suppliers and Technicians
