SUMMARY:
Pharmacist Assistant x 3 vacancies are available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium’s Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) in the Free State (Roving Team).

Background

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges.

It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology. This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional, and global stakeholders.

The main purpose of the job 

  • To assist the Pharmacist in effective manage stock, label, and dispense medication

Location

  • Lejweleputswa District, Free State - Roving Team

Key performance area

Storage and stock control

  • Ordering of stock from the main supplier or the pharmaceutical depot.
  • Receive stock and organize the storage of medication on the shelves paying attention to batch numbers and expiry dates.
  • Store medication according to storage requirements and temperatures.
  • Perform temperature control daily for relevant medication.
  • Consult the Pharmacist to contact suppliers if the equipment is in need of maintenance or repair.
  • Conduct weekly or bi-weekly stock takes and complete relevant inventory forms.
  • Check stock dates and if expired, remove them from shelves for disposal.
  • Inform and advise the Pharmacist of stock to be ordered and stock rotations.
  • Complete and file all relevant forms and documentation.

Dispensing medication

  • Receive prescriptions from clinicians.
  • Evaluate prescriptions for correctness against dosage chart.
  • Check expiry dates and batch number of medications before labeling and dispensing.
  • Interpret prescriptions and prepare medicine accordingly.
  • Prepare medication based on chronological expiry date to ensure usage before the expiration date for dispensing.
  • Label medication and prepare syringes for verification by the Pharmacist.
  • Inform and advise patients or caregivers on the use of medication.
  • Make referrals to Counsellors or Dieticians as and when required.

Data control

  • Entering of data on the pharmacy data system (SVS/RXSolution)
  • Preparing of the monthly reports
  • Reporting system errors to the relevant authorities.
  • Comparison of Pharmacy data to the Clinic data.

Effective self-management and performance ownership

  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management.
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback.
  • Take ownership for driving own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as workshops, forums, conferences, etc.
  • Participate and give input in ad hoc projects and initiatives.

Required minimum education and training

  • Grade 12 and a Certificate as Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant (1 year)

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities

  • Certification in basic HIV and good clinical practice.
  • Experience in adherence counseling when dispensing medication.
  • Experience working in a public or private pharmacy for at least 2 years with experience in the dispensing of ARV drugs will be beneficial.
  • Good administration skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ordered, systematic, and analytical.
  • Assertive, confident, and adaptable.
  • Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently, and work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Display concern for patients and willingness to respond to patients’ needs and requirements.   

Required minimum work experience

  • Completion of in-service training and examination as required by the above certification.
