A Pharmacist (Half Day) vacancy is available at our Client Wits Health Consortium's Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) in Port Elizabeth - Eastern Cape.

Background
Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (“WHC“) is a wholly owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.
The Clinical HIV Research Unit (CHRU) was initiated in 1998 by Professor Ian Sanne, under the auspices of the University of the Witwatersrand (WITS). Today the CHRU is an HIV/AIDS, TB and Cervical Cancer research syndicate of the Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited (WHC), which is a wholly-owned subsidiary company of WITS.
The CHRU is proudly the first International Clinical Research Site (CRS) of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). To date it remains one of the most successful international sites within the ACTG. The site is substantially funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and USAID/PEPFAR.
Based at the Helen Joseph Academic Hospital in Johannesburg, the CHRU conducts research into HIV-AIDs, carrying out clinical trials that encompass associated dread diseases (TB, Cervical Cancer and other opportunistic infections) and provides technical expertise and assistance, training of health care personnel, quality assurance assessments of sites, and clinical support services.
Main purpose of the job
- Managing a registered pharmacy specializing in clinical research and ensuring that medication is effectively dispensed to clinical trial patients

Key performance areas
- Manage and maintain a registered Pharmacy with SAPC in accordance with ICH GCP and GPP guidelines
- Comply with all relevant national and international legislative and regulatory requirements
- Formalize and implement standard operating procedures
- Development and maintenance of the Pharmacy establishment plan
- Manage the temperature control (manual and electronic), maintenance of equipment and general housekeeping of the Pharmacy according to relevant standards and requirements
- Assist with overseeing the inspection and maintenance of the generator
- Record and report PAB/MCC/IRB as per GCP requirements
- Maintain and safely keep complete and accurate records
- Oversee the security of the Pharmacy by ensuring that no unauthorized personnel enter the Pharmacy
- Assist with training relevant staff members on Pharmacy practices and requirements
- Evaluate prescriptions for correctness, dosage corrections and appropriateness of medications, formulation and time frames
- Check expiry dates and batch number of medication before labeling and dispensing
- Interpret prescriptions and prepare medicine accordingly
- Verify and check correct labeling of medication
- Advise patients and caregivers on the correct use of medicine or refer to Counsellor
- Mix Compound and dispense medications timeously and accurately to patients
- Administer process and file relevant documentation
- Assist with management and overseeing of the Pharmacy’s stock by conducting weekly or bi-weekly stock takes
- Order medicines (locally or importing) from suppliers to ensure sufficient stock levels and availability of medicine
- Manage and control the correct packing and labeling of medicines
- Control and administer expired and disposal stock by following the relevant procedures in destructing medications
- Administer process and file relevant documentation
- Supervise and manage the duties of subordinates
- Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments through individual coaching and other support mechanisms
- Develop subordinates to their full potential by identifying and addressing staff training needs
- Be actively involved in developing training materials specified by the Director
Required minimum education and training
- Bachelor degree in pharmacy (B.Pharm)
- Certification in basic HIV and infectious diseases would be advantageous
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
- Exceptional organizational and administrative skills
- Excellent checking and QC skills
- MS Office proficiency
- Good clinical practice (GCP) certification.
- Ensuring strict compliance to GCP and GPP
- Experience in clinical trials
Required minimum work experience
- Minimum 1-2 years’ experience in retail/hospital Experience in clinical trials and/or experience in an HIV environment will be an advantage
- Previous experience working with HIV and infectious diseases would be advantageous
