JOB DESCRIPTION:

Main purpose of the job:

  • Provides strategic and operational oversight of the Pharmacy/Pharmacist according to South African pharmacy legislation, Good Clinical Practice, and Protocol/Sponsor ensuring legislative adherence

Location:

  • 22 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

  • Comply with all legislative and regulatory requirements and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • Ensure Compliance in so far as Pharmacy registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
  • Participate as the Pharmacist of Record (PoR) for relevant clinical trials
  • Ensure compliance within the Pharmacy of Clinical Trials and adherence to study protocols
  • Ensure Pharmacy accreditation is ongoing and apply for accreditation as required
  • Ensure adequate Procurement Controls and stock management are in place and are followed within the Pharmacy thereby ensuring correct drug and drug quantities are always on hand within acceptable expiration dates
  • Ensure dispensing of required drugs is facilitated in line with Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP), Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Protocol, and any other legal requirements
  • Ensure waste management and destruction processes are in place within GPP and or sponsor requirements and ensure compliance thereof
  • Facilitate the temperature monitoring within the Pharmacy in conjunction with Operations and Service Providers ensuring no temperature deviations
  • Generate monthly reports to provide feedback on pharmacy operations including quality management, temperature monitoring challenges, monitoring, and prescriptions honored, equipment serviced/calibrated
  • Ensure deadlines are met and appropriate waiting times are adhered to for all participants
  • Conduct internal monitoring and quality assurance per the Pharmacy Quality Management Plan (PQMP)
  • On-going assessments of customer satisfaction using tools such as participant surveys
  • Staff management
  • Provide training or ensure training is provided to Pharmacists in so far as GPP, GCP, NIH, and study-specific requirements
  • Ensure Pharmacy aligned Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are reviewed at a minimum every 24 months and design and implement new SOPs as the need arises in conjunction with management and the Regulatory Manager
  • PQMP and study-specific guidelines are developed and maintained, as required
  • Ensure the pharmacy maintains current reference books and documents
  • Ensure the pharmacy is audit-ready
  • Communicate with other team members including medical officers, study coordinators, and research assistants to ensure compliance with the study protocol
  • Support unit initiatives such as grant applications and training projects
  • Lead cross-reporting team in a manner that promotes productivity within the projects
  • Interpret prescriptions and dispense medication/Investigational Product (IP) according to study protocols and (GPP)
  • Advise participants on the correct use of medication or IP
  • Maintain accountability records for all medication and IP
  • Process and file all relevant documentation including all relevant pharmacy specific participant documentation

Required minimum education and training:

  • BPharm Degree
  • A valid driver’s license, and own transport
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) advantageous

Required minimum work experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of working experience
  • At least 3 years of experience in a clinical trial or research environment and at least 2 years in a management capacity

Professional Body Registration:

  • South African Pharmacy Council

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

  • Experience in clinical trials with network (HPTN/ HVTN) experience will be an advantage
  • High Attention to detail/accuracy
  • Exceptional organizational and administrative skills with knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Patient, tactful and empathetic toward participants
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work extra hours if required from time to time
