Job Description:
Principal Researcher in the Photonics Centre within the Mining
Manufacturing Defence and Security Division. The incumbent will be required to ensure science,
engineering, and technology (SET) excellence are provided and provide research leadership
within the research group.
Key responsibilities:
• Define and execute R&D projects to support the group’s R&D programme
• Develop project proposals for the Parliamentary Grant and external funding
• Interact effectively with other professionals across the biophotonics research group, within
and from stakeholders and industry
• Manage projects executed within the biophotonics group
• Execute Biophotonics experiments in optics, laser physics, cell biology and molecular
biology
• Supervise and support supervision of junior staff including master’s and doctoral students
aligned with the group’s requirements
• Develop sound working knowledge of all the equipment required for the execution of projects.
Qualifications, skills, and experience:
• A Doctoral qualification in biological or physical sciences with at least eight years’ research
experience in any of the following fields of field: physics, biochemistry, molecular biology,
virology, and chemistry
• Demonstrable research skills, proposal and report-writing and project management skills as
indicated by a track record of projects, publications, and other research outputs
• Experience in EHS and Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001, ISO
14001)
• Must be registered with a professional body
• Ability to provide scientific and technical leadership in a multi-disciplinary research field
• Ability to generate new knowledge and innovate
• Good interpersonal and team skills
• Ability to work independently, as well as in a team
• Problem-solving and solution-seeking orientation
• Excellent English communication, presentation and writing skills, including the publication of
technical outputs
• Networking abilities to proactively establish and maintain links with internal and external
stakeholders and clients, as well as the research community
• Experience in lasers and laser applications are essential. Training on various Biophotonics
techniques and equipment will be provided as required.
