  Essential function:

  • Documentation: Documenting the process for all products that fall under their responsibility, this may mean re-actively documenting existing products, maintaining existing documents as well as ensuring the XDS process is followed in the creation of new products (creation of documents)
  • Monitoring: Monitoring all products in their area to ensure that they are meeting the client expectations in terms of performance as well as ensuring that they are using the most up to date versions of data, models, solutions etc. in the product. Understand performance, benchmarking and usage (projected vs actual)
  • Testing: Testing needs to be done on new products that have been created as well as on an ad-hoc basis on existing products to ensure that they are still working the way they were designed to
  • Revenue: Assist in setting revenue targets for their products and monitoring these on a monthly basis, there will also be a need to assist in identifying customers who could use the products and assist the sales team in explaining the benefits to the customers
  • Stakeholders: Work with internal and external stakeholders to design, develop, deploy and monitor new products
  • Project Manager: Fulfil the role of a project manager in terms of co-ordinating the project team responsible for the products under their portfolio
  • Travel: Product Owners will need to travel, there will be a need to meet with stakeholders at all stages of the product development life cycle
  • Work Hours: There is a company standard of 9 hours (8 hours work and 1-hour lunch), there may be a need to work longer hours or occasionally on weekends but this will be managed with the product owner manager
  • Be aware of technology advances: New technology changes in the IT world could mean changes in how we deliver our products and solutions. The Product Owner should always be looking for ways to make our solutions more beneficial to our customers, extending our presence and increasing our business using new technological advances.
  • Product Evangelist: Product Owners will be expected to propagate knowledge of the product and its benefits to stakeholders and non-stakeholders alike.
  • Competitor Products: The product owner must be aware of what competing products are in the market as well as where the difference is between our offerings and that of the competitors.
  Skills and Experience:

  Experience required:

  • 3 Yearsâ?? experience working as a Product Owner
  • 2 Yearsâ?? project management experience

  Maintain existing products:

  • Purpose: Understand why existing products were built, what was the purpose of building them, which clients use these products and is the product still relevant and performing the way it was expected to.
  • Documentation: Ensure all the documentation that is relevant to that product is up to date. This will include product specifications, training manuals and marketing material (product sheets) but will not be limited to just these.
  • Relevance: Establish a confidence level in the product, based on the above 2 points. Is the product delivering at the standard that XDS expects or the purpose that it was built for and is the product still relevant to the XDS clients?
  • Budgets: Setting yearly budget revenue and profit targets for the products. As well as identifying possible clients/industries where the product can and should be used.
  • Monitoring: Make sure on a regular basis that the product is continuing to deliver/perform at the levels it is expected to, based on usage and revenue projections.

  Enhance existing products:

  • Purpose: Understand which of the existing products will need to be enhanced and put together the justification/business case for the enhancements. This could be based on; additional revenue, strategic importance, changes to data or technology etc.
  • Documentation: Ensure all product related documentation is up to date. This will include but not be limited to product specifications, training manuals and marketing material (product sheets)
  • Relevance: Establish if there is a need to enhance an existing product based on XDS being able to derive additional benefits from customers.
  • Budgets: Setting yearly budget targets for what the enhanced product should be able to make as well as identifying possible clients/industries where the product can be used.
  • Monitoring: Make sure on a regular basis that the product enhancement is adding the additional value.

  Creation of new products:

  • Purpose: Follow the project methodology that has been agreed with PMO to ensure that all new products that are being worked on will have a client base once they are developed and that they will be built using existing? client / new client feedback to make sure they are delivering what the market expects.
  • Documentation: Ensure that all documentation as explained by PMO has been completed at the various phases of the product lifecycle.
  • Relevance: Establish which products should be worked on first and communicate this to PMO as well as line managers to ensure that XDS gets maximum benefit from the right products being developed
  • Budgets: Setting yearly budget targets for what the new products should be able to achieve as well as identifying possible clients/industries where the product can be used.
  • Monitor: Make sure on a regular basis that the new product that adding the additional value as projected in the business case.

  • Communication: The ability to communicate at all levels, the role will require the Product Owner to be able to
  • communicate effectively with their team, a peer network of stakeholders, senior executives, technical resources as well as clients.
  • Problem solving: The Product Owner will have to be able to assimilate information from a variety of sources, and develop a coherent product vision, product strategy, product roadmap and product backlog for meeting those needs.
  • Quality: The Product Owner must have high personal standards and always work to deliver the very best product.
  • Project Management: Working with the program management team and other team members, the Product
  • Owner is responsible for ensuring that all facets of the product are delivered according to schedule.
  • Creativity: The Product Owner must be able to create a vision of a solution which stretches the team and delivers true innovation in the market place.
  • Leadership: The Product Owner will be responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team to achieve the product objectives. Those resources will be under the direction of the Product Owner for the duration of the product development lifecycle.
  • Organisation: As a regulated business in many countries, all product information and artefacts must be well managed and available. Using the Product Development Framework, the Product Owner must ensure that the product lifecycle is well managed.
  • Roadmap Management: The Product Owner is responsible for developing and updating the product roadmap. This may require the Product Owner to interface with other Product Owners to ensure that there is roadmap alignment.
  • Team Leadership - The Product Owner is responsible for the motivation and management of the project team. They must ensure that all team members are working together effectively, are communicating with other teams and that they are producing quality work, in line with the overall product vision
