(Lean Manufacturing Specialist)

Grinding Works company which produces, grinds, and sharpens all types of blades for our industrial and manufacturing customers in South Africa and Southern Africa seeks a Production Manager to oversee the manufacturing performance within the company and to ensure that the production lines run without any problems and minimum downtime. Working together with the General Manager, the Production Manager ensures products are manufactured to quality standards and adheres to Safety Health, and Environment regulations.

You should ideally be working at an engineering firm that manufactures steel items.

We are introducing Lean manufacturing principles to improve efficiencies in the factory so we are looking for someone with Lean experience or similar principles.

You must have a thorough understanding of how to cut, grind, surface, and harden various carbon and stainless steels. Hardening is done in our own furnaces. You must have a strong ability to mentor various teams with different skills sets including, milling, grinding, cutting, and furnace operation.

Must have a strong ability to plan and execute maintenance budgets across the various machinery in the factory and experience with implementing Lean Manufacturing goals to improve the operations and processes. Utilize 5S to ensure efficiency gains across numerous production processes.

Manage production efficiency to improve quality and reduce costs and be responsible for actively managing waste in the production process and facilitates the process of identifying root cause and following the implementation plan.

Manage documentation of operating instructions and sustainable implementation of standards and monitor activities on the factory floor to ensure manufacturing and health & safety standards.

Maintain production tracking and quality management and a continuous improvement management process to implement changes within 72 hours.

Report on the availability and performance of machinery in the factory.

Develop maintenance budget and ensure successful implementation of maintenance roster.

Manage factory workers’ recruitment, training, and workplace issues and ensure the factory is achieving Safety, Health, and Environment goals.

Respond to any production-related emergencies which may affect expected production performance.

You will need strong computer literacy skills including Microsoft Office, Word, Excel & Outlook, have the ability to produce budgets for purposes of managing departmental expenses

Good project management and job scheduling capabilities and an understanding of machinery and how to effectively assess the performance of motors and drives.

Identifying problems and implementing preventative strategies to minimize risk and able to develop good working relationships and trust with various teams

Good experience in administering Safety Health and Environment (SHE) procedures and strong problem-solving skills, analytic ability, and be very detail-oriented.

Strong computer-aided design skills (CAD) and a Mechanical Engineering Diploma/Degree with 5 - 7 years'' managerial experience in a similar role (Required).

Experience in LEAN Manufacturing environment.
