POSITION INFO:
Main purpose of the job:
- To provide strategic development, oversight, and management of clinical trials and programs
Location:
- Wits RHI – Research Centre, 7 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, Johannesburg
- On the 3rd and 4th Floor
Key performance areas:
- Provide direction to clinic staff on program implementation
- Provide planning support to clinical and non-clinical staff when implementing programs
- Develop annual budget in consultation with senior management and the multi-disciplinary teams
- Review budgets and adhere to relevant finance and procurement policies
- Develop and integrate operations for the clinic that includes the institute’s multi-disciplinary teams, communicate the operational plan effectively, implement the plan and monitor progress
- Provide ongoing feedback to stakeholders and support to respective teams on projects
- Quality assures the operational activities of the clinic and maintains and implements relevant policies, procedures, and protocols
- Develop research questions that speak to the effectiveness and sustainability of the clinic if required
- Implement best practices based on lessons learned
- Support CTU needs from CRS
- Manage facilities, determine space needs for new projects
- Review project indicators
- Analyse project indicators
- Track and monitor the progress of all projects
- Review project implementation plan and change if necessary
- Review individual work plans
- Review budgets where necessary with the grant manager
- Provide leadership and support to the team
- Hold/attend regular meetings with all partners
- Provide input and information for monthly reports, quarterly and annual reports
- Supporting clinic staff/project managers to identify and profile best practices
- Assess the project activities and external developments within the field to improve outputs on an ongoing basis
- Develop/review the work plan and other strategic project documents for the effective implementation of the project
- Work with colleagues to enhance project goals and outputs
- Identify the needs of the relevant project
- Identify and get the resources required
- Coordinate with external agencies such as public health and NGO partners, regulatory bodies, donor monitoring, and auditing agencies, and others as necessary
- Develop & manage participant/beneficiary recruitment & retention strategies
- Develop and maintain project information systems
- Develop project tools such as SOPs, informed consents, participant/beneficiary information materials, technical guidelines, best practice documents, and other documents as required
- Coordinate and troubleshoot operational activities such as laboratory activities, pharmacy, IT, procurement, etc.
- Conduct training on project processes and activities
- Write project reports for internal/external dissemination
- Present papers and results to stakeholders
- Perform duties per study Delegation of Authority Logs
- Publish scientific publications
- Compile conference presentations
- Disseminate research findings internally and to universities and other stakeholders such as the community, CAGs, and media
- Write research and funding proposals
- Attend to all staffing requirements and administration
- Supervise and manage the duties of subordinates to ensure optimal staff utilization and maintenance of sound labor relations
- Perform and facilitate performance development and assessments
- Identify substandard performance by team members and take necessary corrective action
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management
- Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
- Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
- Take ownership of driving your own career development by participating in ongoing training and development activities such as forums, conferences, policy-setting workshops, etc.
- Comply with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Protocol requirements, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Verify the accuracy of data in source documentation and accuracy of transcription from source data to Case Report Forms (CRF) as needed
- Ensure errors on source documents e.g., CRF are corrected, initialed, and dated (as needed)
- Support the timely transmission/data faxing of relevant Case Report Forms following QC activity (as needed)
- Ensure completion of corrective action of internal and external QC reports and monitoring reviews
- Assist with staff training (and retraining) where error trends are identified
Required minimum education and training:
- Master’s Degree in Health (MPH), or relevant field
Required minimum work experience:
- 5 years experience in a management role in clinical trials
- Demonstrated experience in managing projects
Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:
- Extensive experience working with donor-funded programmes
- Experience in training
- Able to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
- Positive, energetic team leader with an ability to adapt to complex situations
- Adaptable, willing to take initiative
- Strong organizational skills with an accurate approach to work, attention to detail
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills
