JOB DESCRIPTION:

Main purpose of the job:

  • To coordinate and collect qualitative data from one of two study sites (Soweto or Agincourt)
  • The process evaluation will run alongside a randomized controlled trial (RCT), Ntshembo
  • The trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a multicomponent intervention that includes a conditional cash transfer, health education (delivered by lay counselors), and micronutrients to address the nutrition of adolescent girls

Location:

  • Agincourt – Mpumalanga

Key performance areas:

  • Recruit study participants from the implementation teams as well as study participants from their families
  • Conduct in-depth interviews with adult participants and adolescents
  • Write detailed field notes on observations of interactions between the lay health counselors and the adolescent girls and their families
  • Transcribe and translate audio recordings from interviews
  • Work closely with the management team in the recruitment of participants, the setting up of interviews, and any follow-up or referrals
  • Help to analyze findings from interviews for reports
  • Provide regular feedback on progress and challenges
  • Code and analyze qualitative data, and discuss data analysis and interpretation throughout the evaluation process with a qualitative collaborator and others on the study team
  • Assist in project planning and implement the study protocol, including all standard operating procedures
  • Support and contribute to quality control of the qualitative study
  • Maintain all study records in accordance with the study protocol
  • Ensure ethical protocols and procedures are adhered to
  • Convene meetings, liaise and communicate with partners in the communities, and government and as required
  • Maintain database files and records for the project as required

Required minimum education and training:

  • Honors degree in the social sciences (e.g. Public Health, Sociology, Gender studies, Psychology) or another relevant field
  • Experience working or researching in the field of social and behavioral interventions, noncommunicable diseases, and/or adolescent-interventions
  • Excellent understanding of qualitative research methodologies
  • Strong management, administrative, and computer literacy skills (including Zoom/MS Teams, Office Package particularly Excel, and basic knowledge of qualitative data analysis software e.g. MAXQDA, Nvivo, or Atlas-ti)
  • Valid driver's license and ability to drive
  • No criminal record
  • Fluent in English and Xitsonga (Agincourt)

Required minimum work experience:

  • Minimum 2 years experience

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

  • A Master’s degree would be advantageous
  • Experience managing research studies or fieldwork would be an advantage
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment and pay attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a diverse team
  • Well organized
  • Problem solver
  • Experience working with adolescents and vulnerable populations
  • Experience in working with donor-funded projects and in a research or academic environment is an advantage
  • National travel and overtime/weekend may be required from time to time
  • Working in rural or underresourced areas is required
  • For the Agincourt position, must be willing to relocate to Ehlanzeni District Mpumalanga for the duration of the study
  • Interest in undertaking a PhD nested or embedded in the study would be an added advantage
