SUMMARY:
Our client, a leader in the FMCG and retail distribution sector, is seeking a Quality Controller to join their team in the Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha.This role is critical to ensuring that all stock items received from suppliers meet company specifications and comply with relevant food safety legislation and standards.
POSITION INFO:
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide leadership to the Quality team at the Distribution Centre.
- Monitor supplier compliance with product quality and food safety standards.
- Compile and present reports to management regarding quality and safety concerns.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with suppliers and ensure compliance across the supply chain.
- Schedule and participate in supplier and retailer site visits.
- Coordinate supplier training aligned with company requirements.
- Keep detailed records of stock quality inspections and compile daily reports with actionable recommendations.
- Track and report on quality trends and supplier performance.
- Facilitate regular team meetings and share updates with internal stakeholders.
- Communicate quality issues proactively and ensure all concerns are addressed promptly.
- Manage claims related to damaged, poor-quality, or incorrect stock.
- Support innovation in quality assurance processes (e.g., QC Apps, Cold Chain Management).
- Enforce compliance with internal processes and legal requirements.
- Develop and maintain Best Operating Practices (BOPs) related to quality.
- Maintain a high standard of housekeeping within the department.
- Take ownership of all quality-related issues and customer complaints, and follow up with suppliers.
- Lead traceability exercises and manage responses to national recalls.
- Inform suppliers of any changes in legislation and ensure continued compliance.
- Handle staff grievances and disciplinary processes where necessary.
- Monitor and manage staff performance using internal systems and ROI processes.
- Provide general support to other areas of the department as required.
Candidate Requirements:
- Matric (Grade 12).
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Food Technology, Biotechnology, Consumer Science (Food & Nutrition), or Agricultural Quality Control – essential.
- 2–3 years’ experience in the fresh foods sector (e.g., Produce, Bakery, Meat, or Home Meal Replacement).
- Supervisory experience and a strong customer service background.
- Computer literacy and working knowledge of SAP – essential.
- A team player with excellent communication skills (written and verbal).
- High attention to detail, assertive, and enthusiastic.
- Knowledge of Food Safety Management Systems (FSMS).
- Experience in internal and external auditing.
- Willingness to work shifts, overtime, weekends, and public holidays as required.
- Strong administrative and leadership skills.
- Deadline-driven and results-focused.
- Own reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license – essential.
