SUMMARY:
The Clinical Research Centre, working with the University of Cape Town Lung Institute (www.lunginstitute.co.za) require applications for a RESEARCH MEDICAL OFFICER* on a Fixed Term Contract.

The Research Medical Officer will use medical expertise to provide clinical services to patients enrolled onto clinical trials being conducted by the UCT Clinical Research Centre (UCT CRC). The trials will be led by different principal investigators who work with the UCT CRC. The Research Medical Officer will work closely with the Principal Investigators, but will be employed by the UCT CRC and will report to the director of the UCT CRC. In addition, he/she will serve as project officer, working with director of the UCT CRC to strategically grow the trials unit, enable capacity development in clinical research, provide treatment access for patients and develop a clinical research training program.

POSITION INFO:
Requirements:

MBChB degree with research experience in grant funded and industry trials
Research experience should include working in a hospital setting with ill participants with multiple co-morbidities
Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)
Good management skills
Computing skills appropriate for medical research
Verbal, written and reading fluency in English
Excellent Organisational and logistical skills
Ability to work independently, as well as within a dynamic team

The following will be advantageous:

Experience in preparation and taking part in a clinical trial audit
Experience working in a tertiary hospital
Availability to travel locally and internationally for site initiation and monitoring visits
Fluency in Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa
Good Clinical Practice Certificate

The successful candidate will have the following major responsibilities:

Recruitment and follow up of study participants in accordance with Good Clinical Practice
Clinical evaluation of patients and patient safety management (reviewing adverse events and serious adverse events)
Phlebotomy and transport of blood specimens to the laboratory from the clinical site may be occasionally required.
Maintenance, cross-checking (QC) and entry of accurate data at clinical site
Liaise closely and maintain effective communication with the project coordinator and the Principal Investigator.
Liaising with the regulatory team about reports as needed.
Oversight of the record keeping of study activities for billing purposes and liaising with the finance team as needed.
Management, supervision, and teaching of clinical research staff as required by the project
Playing an active role in the development of a practical clinical research training program aimed at full time clinicians who are keen to take part in clinical research.

Additional Information:

This position will be based in UCT Clinical Research Centre offices in the Old Main Building, Groote Schuur Hospital, and studies will be conducted mainly at Groote Schuur Hospital, in Mowbray Cape Town
12 months Fixed Term Contract
Working Hours: 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday
