Research Fieldworkers (12 Months Contract – possible 12 months extention) Banakekeli

Main purpose of the job:

• Following up a cohort of participants and administering the questionnaires and protocols
• The study aims to understand challenges for families in South Africa
• Three generations, children, parents, and grandparents will be interviewed about their health, education, family and relationships, violence, and communities

Location:

• Greater Nelspruit Area, Mpumalanga

Key performance areas:

• Work as part of a research team
• Locate participants for the study
• Follow the study protocols and procedures
• Interview of young children, young adults, and older adults using a standardized questionnaire on a tablet
• Conduct arts-based activities with children (drawings, making figures with play-dough) as part of the interview process
• Ensure the safety of participants and minimization of distress
• Make referrals to a social worker as required
• Assist with other ad hoc tasks as and when required

Required minimum education and training:

• Grade 12

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum 1 year of experience

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Experience in working with children/adolescents
• Experience in conducting surveys will be an advantage
• Ability to use and navigate a tablet or smartphone (e.g. WhatsApp)
• Excellent communication and social skills in particular with children
• Experience speaking about difficult topics
• Good Siswati and English language skills
• Willingness to work-study hours (Monday - Friday or Tuesday – Saturday)
• Able to maintain confidentiality, and to be professional at all times
• Ability to manage and maintain good relations with both the participants and fellow team members
• Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and ability to work both as a team and independently
• Ability to commence employment on 14th June
• No criminal record
• Experience in health research will be an advantage
• Ability to work under pressure in informal environments
• Clean driver’s license and ability to drive project car
• Tsonga Language skills
