SUMMARY:
A Research Nurse (6 Months Fixed Term Contract) vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium in Cape Town - Western Cape.

POSITION INFO:

Background

Wits Health Consortium (Pty) Limited ("WHC") is a wholly-owned Company of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (South Africa) under its Faculty of Health Sciences. WHC provides Faculty with a legal framework within which to operate the research and other activities necessary to support its academic objectives. In addition, WHC offers a range of products and services to the Academics conducting these activities in order to assist with the management thereof.

Main purpose of the job

  • To plan and manage the treatment pathways, provide nursing care through the treatment phase of the trial
  • Work closely with the Study Coordinator, Data Manager and Principle Investigator based within the national coordinating hub
  • Ensure that the trial is run according to the protocol, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and local regulatory requirements

  • Cape Town - Western Cape 

Key performance areas

  • Ensure that the trial is conducted in accordance with the protocol and associated standard operating procedures
  • Assist clinicians and Hub colleagues in setting-up patient pathways
  • Attend trial-specific training and ensure that training is disseminated in the hospital allowing out of hours adherence to the protocol
  • Administer drugs and therapy according to the protocol
  • Complete and maintain case report forms in accordance with trial requirements
  • Ensure that all staff are aware of the correct treatment pathway for patients and time points for data collection
  • Ensure that data is captured in the source records and reported promptly to the Sponsor
  • Be responsible for reporting adverse events in a timely manner at the local level and escalate as appropriate
  • Collect information for regular reports on the progress of the trial
  • Assist in site audits and monitoring visits carried out by regulatory authorities or the Sponsor
  • Coordinate and respond to queries received from the International Coordinating Centre (ICC) at Birmingham Clinical Trials Unit (BCTU)
  • Assist with obtaining local approval(s) for the programme, including assistance with submission of amendments as necessary
  • Assist with maintenance of the Investigator Site File (ISF) and patient Case Report Form (CRF) files, ensuring that documentation is current and accurate
  • Assist with maintenance of accountability records, including retaining oversight of intervention supply stock levels at the site
  • Participate in and contribute to Hub general activities e.g. meetings, training, etc.

Required minimum education and training

  • Qualified as a Primary Health Care Nurse
  • Professional body registration - Registered with the South African Nursing Council

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Knowledge and understanding of research governance regulations, principles and guidelines including Good
  • Clinical Practice, patient confidentiality, etc.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills with the ability to communicate effectively (both written and oral)
  • Able to develop and acquire new skills as required
  • Flexible and ability to delegate work
  • Very well organized, with good attention to detail
  • Excellent time management skills with an ability to plan and prioritize
  • Able to work independently, prioritize their own workload to meet schedules and seek advice when necessary
  • Able to work across professional team and organizational boundaries
  • Good computer skills and familiarity with MS Office applications
  • Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Good skills in building and strengthening partnership
  • Able to work shifts including nights/weekends
  • Drivers license and own transport.
  • Willing to travel.

Required minimum work experience

  • 1-year experience in clinical trials
  • Experience in conducting face-to-face interviews and surveys for qualitative research
  • Experience working with a donor-funded project and with the private sector will be an added advantage
