A Research Nurse - CROWN Coronation vacancy is available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium's Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (RHI) in Hillbrow, Johannesburg - Gauteng.

Background

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges.

It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health and vaccinology. This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders.

Main purpose of the job

  • Conducting day-to-day research-related activities including collection of DBS specimens, clinical assessments, management of anaphylaxis, participant recruitment, data collection, data capturing and quality assurance according to protocols

Location

  • Ward 21 CRS - 22 Esselen Street, Hillbrow, Johannesburg

Key performance areas

  • Community sensitization on research activities
  • Screening participants for study eligibility
  • Conduct an informed consent process with participants
  • Data collection from participants through structured interviews
  • The abstraction of data from participant medical records
  • Storage and archiving of data according to SOP’s (electronic and hard copy data)
  • Adherence to study protocols, GCP, and local requirements for the ethical conduct of research in human participants
  • Support the team with any other research-related activities
  • Instruct and assist patients on self-collection of dried blood spot specimens
  • Ensure resus trolley is stocked and that all equipment is in working condition
  • Be able to manage anaphylaxis
  • Refer patients for further care as needed
  • Maintain all participant files and filing systems
  • Complete all relevant project administration as and when required (i.e. participant reimbursements)
  • Compile daily and weekly participant accrual reports
  • Management of project inventory and stock
  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrates effective self-management
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
  • Take ownership for driving your own career development in attending training and development sessions and relevant meetings
  • Attend training and development sessions such as journal club, seminars, writing series workshops, etc.

Required minimum education and training

  • Professional nursing degree (or equivalent)

Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

  • Certification in good clinical practice
  • Experience in a research environment
  • Sound technical knowledge of nursing care particularly infectious diseases and vaccines
  • An ordered and systematic approach to tasks with strict compliance to protocols
  • Tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
  • Good administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Required minimum work experience

  • Minimum 1-year working experience in a nursing and/or research (qualitative and quantitative) environment
