Background
The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges.
It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health and vaccinology. This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional and global stakeholders.
Main purpose of the job
- Conducting day-to-day research-related activities including collection of HPV specimens, HIV Counselling and testing, participant recruitment, data collection, capturing and quality assurance
- The research assistant will also support and oversee the research assistant in the day-to-day administration and management of sentinel surveillance sites
Location
Key performance areas
- Inform participants about the study
- Screen potential participants and obtain informed consent according to SOPs
- Administer study questionnaires/interviews
- Conduct pre and post-HIV test Counselling
- Able to take the participant through the informed consent process
- Draw blood from participants and send samples or specimens to the laboratory
- Conduct physical examinations where necessary
- Perform HIV and pregnancy bedside tests
- Inform participants of test results
- Support community sensitisation on HPV research activities
- Screen participants for study eligibility
- Data collection from participants through structured interviews
- The abstraction of data from participants medical records
- Storage and archiving of data according to SOP (electronic and hard copy data)
- Adherence to study protocols, GCP, and local requirements for the ethical conduct of research in human participants
- Support the team with any other related research activities
- Instruct and assist patients on the collection of the HPV specimen
- Refer patients for further care as needed
- Provide SRH and PHC care as needed
- Maintain all participants files and filing systems
- Complete all relevant project administration as and when required (e.g. participants reimbursements)
- Compile daily and weekly accrual report
- Management of project inventory and stock
- Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management
Required minimum education and training
- Diploma in General Nursing
Professional body registration
- South African Nursing Council (SANC)
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities
- A diploma in Primary Health Care or similar will be an advantage
- Certification in Good Clinical Practice
- Experience in a research environment
- Ordered and systematic with strict compliance to protocols
- Be tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
- Good administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
- Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Respectful with a sound work ethic
Required minimum work experience
- Minimum 1-year nursing experience in STI/HIV
- Preferable previous research experience
