Research Nurse (Oncology) WitS WCR

Main purpose of the job:

• To provide quality nursing care services under the supervision of a professional nurse within the scope of practice as defined by the SANC
• This includes support activities such as providing patient care and general assistance to the clinical trial offices
• Oncology experience is essential

Location:

• Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital

Key performance areas:

Patient Liaison and care

• Receive patients referred by clinicians for screening or from a clinical trial center
• Check patient files and details
• Refer/receive patients to/from designated doctors
• Ensure that relevant documentation has been completed i.e. screening request form, patient tracking list
• Confirm next appointment dates
• Liaise with driver to collect patients together with their files
• Assist with pre-screening of non-oncology patients as and when required

Nursing Assistant

• Assist the Treatment Sister in preparing the treatment room for patients
• Assist the Treatment Sister with chemotherapy infusion and patient vitals such as blood pressure, temperature, and weight or height measurements
• Perform basic housekeeping duties that include cleaning of the treatment room, waste disposal, sterilizing equipment

Teamwork and support

• Provide office support by answering incoming calls, providing information, and/or taking messages as necessary
• Perform general administration duties such as scanning, photocopying, and filing
• Assist the team with ad hoc assignments and duties

Required minimum education and training:

• Grade 12 with a relevant qualification that allows registration with the SANC as a Registered Nurse

Required minimum work experience:

• Minimum of 3 years experience as an Oncology Nurse

Professional body registration:

• Registration with SANC

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

• Ability to demonstrate an elementary understanding of nursing legislation and related legal and ethical nursing practices to ensure basic patient care
• Ability to promote quality elementary nursing care as directed by the clinical trial centers
• Phlebotomy and IV placing essential
• Overtime may be required from time to time
• Office Administration duties are expected
