SUMMARY:
Research Nurses x 2 (Fixed Term Contract) vacancies are available at our Client, Wits Health Consortium’s Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) in Hillbrow, Johannesburg - Gauteng.

Background

The Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI) is a renowned African-led research institute that seeks solutions to Africa’s health challenges.

It is located within the University of the Witwatersrand and addresses some of the greatest public health concerns affecting our region, including HIV and its related problems, sexual and reproductive health, and vaccinology. This is done through pioneering, multi-disciplinary research; responsive technical support and innovation in health services; and evidence-based policy development and advocacy with national, regional, and global stakeholders.

The main purpose of the job 

  • To provide best practice data collection, clinical assessments, collection of specimen and care according to protocols and to provide pre- and post-test HIV counseling

Location

  • Wits RHI – Research Centre, Hillbrow

Key performance areas

  • Inform participants about the study
  • Screen potential participants and obtain informed consent according to SOPs
  • Administer study questionnaires/Interviews
  • Conduct pre and post-HIV test Counselling
  • Draw blood from participants and send samples or specimens to the laboratory
  • Conduct physical examinations
  • Perform rapid bedside tests e.g., HIV and pregnancy
  • Inform participants of test results
  • Treat diagnosis according to test results and sexually transmitted disease according to syndromic management guidelines or laboratory diagnosis
  • Provide appropriate health education and adherence counseling where necessary
  • Refer participants to alternative care if necessary
  • Clean and sterilize all used speculum and equipment
  • Collect participant''s data from medical notes and complete CRFs
  • Maintain full clinical records for all participants
  • Maintain an inventory register of drug stocks, laboratory samples, promotional materials, and condoms
  • Perform sample-related activities such as labeling, storage and collection
  • Compile relevant reports and feedback on all activities
  • Control and order consumables stock [i.e. linen savers, gloves, etc.]
  • Quality control of CRFs and other study documents
  • Take ownership and accountability for tasks and demonstrate effective self-management
  • Follow through to ensure that quality and productivity standards of own work are consistently and accurately maintained
  • Maintain a positive attitude and respond openly to feedback
  • Take ownership of driving your own career development sessions and relevant meetings
  • Comply with Good Clinical Practice (GCP), Protocol requirements and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Verify the accuracy of data in source documentation and accuracy of transcription from source data to Care Report Forms (CRF) as needed
  • Ensure errors on source data e.g. CRF’s are corrected, initialed, and dated
  • Support the timely data entry/transmission/data faxing of relevant Case Report Forms following QC activity (as needed)
  • Ensure completion of corrective action of internal and external QC reports and monitoring reviews
  • Assist with staff training (and retraining) where error trends are identified

Required minimum education and training

  • Diploma in General Nursing (3 years)
  • Valid Driver’s License

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities

  • A diploma in Primary Health Care or similar will be an added advantage
  • Certification in good clinical practice
  • Experience in a research environment
  • Ordered and systematic with strict compliance to protocols
  • Be tactful, respectful and maintain confidentiality
  • Good administrative skills together with working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Able to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Respectful with sound work ethic

Required minimum work experience

  • Minimum 1-year nursing experience in STI/HIV
