POSITION INFO:
CORE PURPOSE OF JOB
The incumbent is responsible for technical support and facility maintenance within the Mechanical Engineering Research Testing Laboratories and associated facilities, as well as, technical project support. The candidate needs to facilitate and administer the learning process for students in modules presented at the Nelson Mandela University at undergraduate and post graduate level in all laboratories of the department of Mechanical Engineering. To candidate needs to be involved in community engagement activities. The candidate needs to support the Nelson Mandela University values and to implement the KPI’s required for the position.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Laboratory research equipment management, i.e. installation, calibration, operation and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment.
• Assisting with research activities, collaboration, processes and measurements.
• Designing, fabrication and modification of laboratory equipment to improve research capability.
• Faultfinding and reparation of equipment, test fixtures and special purpose circuits.
• Document updating procedures, operational details and description of equipment modification, updating of inventory records of laboratory equipment.
• Planning and scheduling laboratory workload.
• lead a team of technicians and provide technical expertise.
• Manage all administrative duties as required for procurement of equipment and maintenance requirements for all projects and laboratories.
• Implement and enforce quality assurance processes to ensure the reliability and functionality of all laboratory equipment and maintaining safety standards
• Develop and conduct training programs for technicians and students to enhance their skills and knowledge.

• Ability to manage all laboratory operations. • Proficiency in installing, calibrating, operating, and maintaining various laboratory equipment. • Ability to provide a safe and healthy work environment, conduct risk assessments, and educate others on safety regulations. • The ability to convey technical information clearly and understandably, both in verbal and written forms. • Have project management skills to plan, organize, and execute technical projects efficiently to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget. • Work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with industry, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds to identify technical requirements and provide support for multi-disciplinary projects. • Ability to facilitate and develop learning manuals at undergraduate and postgraduate level in utilizing equipment to conduct research or experimental work. • Ability to work well with other members of the Department and as part of a team.
REQUIREMENTS
• Successful candidate must hold at least a BEng or BEngTech Hons in Mechanical/ Mechatronics Engineering
• A minimum of 5 years technical experience,
• Professional registration: aminimumofMechanical/Mechatronics Technician or Technologists will be beneficial
• Have a strong background in Laser welding, Friction stir welding, taper stud welding, and characterization techniques e.g. iXRD.
• Track record in guiding and training students to perform experimental work
