POSITION INFO:

Become the CEO of a medium size group of businesses that is a Subsidiary of a larger, high profile, well established and profitable Group of Companies that focuses its business in South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa in particular.  This Group of businesses have a network of multiple Branches throughout SA and uses Distributors.  It imports, sources locally to a lesser degree and markets their product range to both customers directly and via Distributors.  It also provides solutions to the residential and corporate marketplace which includes project management of its installations, direct sales to its broad based customers and distributes cutting edge technology products which requires high tech expertise.  There are also other non-core services and products which form part of this Group of businesses that nevertheless provides a footprint nationally.  However, this non-core business can be aggressively expanded to become an integral part of their future business model and strategy.  The CEO will report directly to one of the Executive Directors of the Board of Directors where the culture of the Holding Company is decentralised.  This means that the Chief Executive will primarily be responsible for running all facets of the business whilst complying to the Group’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Governance. 

The successful incumbent will be supported by a Management Team consisting of Financial Director, Sales Director, Divisional Heads, Marketing Manager and Technology Head who will take responsibility for all projects and technical support.  The CEO will also be given the latitude to refigure the organogram if deemed necessary and to make any logical and business driven restructuring decisions if required.  Needless to say that the current Covid pandemic has materially interfered with the group’s profitability and meeting their goals. The new CEO will be expected to bring stability back to this entity and focus on business strategy to rebuild the necessary structures to ensure that the various high tech products become brand leaders once again.  In addition, the project service arm which concentrates on high-end tech installations in the market place needs to be resuscitated to meet the needs of the demanding end users to ensure it is ‘par excellence’ as defined by the project specifications.

Key performance areas, inter alia, include:         

  • Maintain exemplary relationships with key suppliers, some of which the business has represented for many decades.
  • Grow market share while improving gross margins.
  • Ensure the business adapts to the changing landscape in terms of the latest cutting edge technology in the industry worldwide
  • Regain market share by using innovative sales and marketing methodologies like effective brand marketing and provide superior customer service with an attitude of customer-centricity.  Also ensure the best use of route to market so as their broad customer base always receive their products timeously.
  • Achieve the proper balance between working capital levels and operating profits, noting that the primary performance measures will be based on ‘growth in operating profits’ and ‘return on net operating profits’.

Requirements:

  • Ideally a tertiary qualification and business diploma or similar.  Nevertheless, the candidate must have a proven history of general management and being a leader and motivator of people.
  • Although a high tech background would be recommended, nevertheless, my Client is flexible on industry experience provided that the candidate has a history of success at executive level. 
  • An understanding of the importance of gross profit rather than volume and the relationship to working capital are critical in managing the several businesses within this group cluster.
  • A highly assertive yet diplomatic individual, entrepreneurial, decisive, proactive goal setter, self-driven and motivated, business and commercial acumen, able to create positive and inter-personal relationships and be a leader of people are all descriptive words needed by the CEO to be successful in this role.
