Job description / core competencies:
To ensure effective management of all SHERQ systems through the development, implementation, and compliance monitoring of risk based SHERQ Managements Systems in accordance with relevant ISO/SANS Standards as well as applicable legislation.
To coordinate and support the identification, assessment, mitigation and management of risks for the company via a defined enterprise-wide risk framework, thereby ensuring the risks are mitigated and monitored in accordance with the company’s risk policies.
To manage the Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality (SHERQ) division of the company.
Ensure that the company safety and quality standards are identified, established and implemented so as to position the company as a world-class RTS ( Regional Transit System - rail technical strategy) operator
To develop/review the appropriate Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality standards for the company.
To ensure the application of the appropriate safety and quality standards procedure for emergency situations.
Ensure the safe operations of the mobilization system.
Ensure the review of all policies, procedures and standards in relations to SHERQ.
Develop and implement continual improvement programs to meet requirements of all SHERQ systems.
Ensure that safety awareness campaigns and safety training programmes are developed and carried out.
Ensure that regular occupational safety inspection and hazardous work audits are carried out.
Ensure that incident inquiries for accidents and serious incidents are conducted.
Ensure that fire drill exercise and fire prevention programme are carried out and fire safety standards are complied with at all times.
Ensure certification is obtained and maintained in the area of quality assurance standards such as ISO9001 :2000 for Quality Management standards and ISO 14000 for Environmental Management standards.
Ensure compliance of all processes and procedures with the Quality Management System through audit checks.
Conduct periodical reviews of Standard Operating Procedures to ensure that they are relevant to the prevailing conditions.
Review and approve permanent and temporary operating and maintenance procedures proposed by the concerned divisions.
Update the CEO and other Divisional Heads on performance indicators.
Submit proposal for division annual budget, control expenses within the budget agreed by the board.
Develop strategies and plans including relevant training programmes to meet all divisional objectives and continually improve performance standards.
Maintain good staff morale and job satisfaction and promote productivity movements in the division.
Participate in the ExCo and contribute to the company strategy.
Full time member and co-Chairperson of Liaison meetings, and Disaster Management Forum meetings.

Job Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
Degree in Engineering or Degree in Environmental Health, Safety Management, Occupational Health and Safety or related qualification
Business/Leadership post grad qualification essential
At least 10 to 15 years relevant practical and industrial experience
Knowledge of the following legislation: COID Act, OHS Act, BCEA, LRA, Railway Safety Act, Medicine, and related substance Act.
