SUMMARY:
Our client is in the food manufacturing -FMCG sector and is looking to employ a Sustainability Officer for their Head-office in Pinetown.
POSITION INFO:
Minimum Requirements:
- Degree or Diploma in Environmental Sciences/ Environmental Health / Occupational Health and Safety/ Industrial Engineering
- ISO 14001 Awareness
- First aid
- SHE Rep training
- Chemical Handling Training
- 2-3 Years Food Industry/Manufacturing/chemical/production environment Experience
- Relevant experience in sustainability practices, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
Key Competences- High proficiency in Microsoft Office is essential
- Must be well presented and professional
- Strong understanding of sustainability principles and environmental regulations.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to analyse data and generate actionable insights.
- Strategic Thinking: Ability to develop long-term sustainability strategies that align with the organization’s mission and goals.

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities- Ensure compliance to the OHSAct & NEMA and put in place measures to address/mitigate risks.
- Develop and implement waste management programs to minimize waste generation and ensure proper disposal.
- Identify opportunities to reduce pollution and minimize environmental impact through process improvements and pollution prevention measures.
- Identify and assess areas for improvement and innovation in sustainability practices.
- Stay updated on industry trends, technologies, and best practices in sustainability.
- Provides guidance on environmental best practices and emerging regulations.
- Develop and conduct training and awareness programs to foster a culture of sustainability.
- Assists in the development of SHER policies, procedures, and protocols.
- Participates in incident investigations and helps identify corrective actions. Collect, analyse, and report on sustainability metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs). Implement environmental management systems (EMS), such as ISO 14001.
- Support sustainability initiatives, including energy efficiency and carbon footprint reduction efforts, Reporting.
- Environmental Compliance (eThekwini, DFFE, etc), Drive the implementation of Environmental Goals and Targets
- Supervise the regular inspection of emergency response equipment: (First Aiders, Fire Fighters and SHE Reps)
- Assist management in maintaining all Permits, licenses, certificates, authorisations required to operate.
- Participate & Attend SHER Committee meetings.
- Responsible for environmental as well as other SHEQ awareness modules in employee induction sessions
