Safety Officer

SUMMARY:
Phakisa Holdings is requiring Safety Officers to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations. Below are the key requirements for this critical role in the Western Cape.

POSITION INFO:
Key Duties & Responsibilities

• HSE Compliance & Risk Management
• Implement and enforce OHS Act, COID Act, and client-specific HSE standards.
• Conduct risk assessments (HIRA), job safety analyses (JSA), and audits.
• Ensure compliance with ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and other HSE management systems.

• Monitor work sites for unsafe acts/conditions and take corrective action.
• Lead incident investigations (root cause analysis, RCA) and report findings.
• Track near-misses, injuries, and environmental incidents (statutory reporting).

• Conduct HSE inductions, toolbox talks, and emergency drills.
• Train employees on PPE, hazardous materials (SANS 10228), and permit systems.
• Mentor safety representatives and contractors on best practices.

• Develop and test emergency response plans (ERP).
• Coordinate firefighting, first aid, and evacuation procedures.
• Ensure safety equipment (fire extinguishers, gas detectors, spill kits) is functional.

• Maintain HSE records (permits, inspection logs, training registers).
• Prepare monthly HSE performance reports for management.
• Liaise with DoL inspectors, clients, and contractors on compliance matters.

• Mandatory Certifications
• SAMTRAC/NEBOSH International General Certificate (or equivalent).
• SACPCMP Registration (as CHSO/OHSP) – Required for construction sites.
• First Aid Level 3 & Advanced Fire Fighting.
• Industry-Specific Training
• Hazardous Chemical Handling (SANS 10228).
• Incident Investigation (ICAM/TapRooT).
• Working at Heights & Confined Space Safety.
